Former US president Bill Clinton has been receiving treatment at a California hospital for the last two days, following his admission on Tuesday.

As reported by BBC News, the 75-year-old is said to be "on the mend" following treatment at the UC Irvine Medical Center for a "non-Covid-related infection".

Angel Ureña, who is a spokesperson for the former POTUS, said that Clinton is now "in good spirits".

According to CNN, Clinton had to be admitted to the hospital after a urinary tract infection spread to his bloodstream.

In a joint statement from Dr. Alpesh Amin - chair of medicine at UC Irvine Medical Center - and Dr. Lisa Bardack - Clinton's personal primary physician - they reveal that the former president has been "administered IV antibiotics and fluids".

Physicians also revealed that Clinton was kept at the facility for "continuous monitoring", adding: "After two days of treatment, his white blood cell count is trending down and he is responding to antibiotics well."

Clinton has a history with heart disease, and doctors at the UC Irvine Medical Center are said to be in contact with his cardiologist and New York medical team.

The statement added that he is expected to be discharged and allowed to go home soon.

A source close to the former president told People that Clinton was visiting California while carrying out duties for his nonprofit organization the Clinton Foundation. During the trip, he reportedly started to feel "fatigued".

Back in 2004, Clinton was forced to undergo quadruple bypass surgery after doctors found major blockages in his arteries. Then, six years later in 2010, the former president required to coronary stents after experiencing complications from his previous surgery.

BBC reports that not long after his second procedure, Clinton followed a plant-based diet - following his well-documented love of fatty foods.

Clinton served as the 42nd president of the United States, sitting in the Oval office from 1993–2001. In 1998, he became the second president in history to be impeached after he was accused of lying to investigators about his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. He was subsequently acquitted by Senate in 1999.
