Joe Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 Presidential Election has left the United States in uncharted waters.

In his statement, released on Sunday (July 21), 81-year-old Biden officially announced that he will not be seeking reelection in the upcoming election in November.

Describing his time in the Oval Office as the "greatest honor" of his life, Biden went on to explain: "And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," Biden said.

The bombshell news - shocking, albeit perhaps not surprising - sent social media abuzz. Here's a collection of how the biggest names in Hollywood responded to the news...

Legendary singer and actress Barbara Streisand praised Biden, writing on X: "Joe Biden will go down in history as a man who accomplished significant achievements in his 4 year term. We should be grateful for his upholding of our democracy."

Marvel star and filmmaker Jon Favreau tweeted: "A courageous and selfless decision. The President did what he’s done for the last four years - he listened to the American people and put the country’s interests ahead of his own.

"The exact opposite of Donald Trump."

And filmmaker Lee Daniels took to Instagram to write: "Feeling proud to be an American on this historic day! We have a lot of work to do now. Trump is going to hit her hard. VOTE VOTE VOTE" - as well as sharing a video praising Harris and stating how his "mom will see the first Black woman president".

And just hours after tweeting how she was "ridin' with Biden", Kathy Griffin responded to the POTUS' statement by saying: "Let’s make history!!!! Finally!!!".

MCU star Mark Ruffalo also called for support for the Democrats, writing: "Okay everybody, now we have our marching orders and time to hit the trail running.

"No to Trump/Vance. No to the right-wing Christian religious takeover of our nation. Nothing wrong with Christianity; just shouldn’t be running a nation birthed from freedom of religion."

Jamie Lee Curtis also used her platform to voice support for Kamala Harris, writing: "I support wholeheartedly @joebiden and his decision to step down and to endorse unreservedly @kamalaharris

"SHE IS TRUSTED AND TESTED and she is a fierce advocate for women's rights and people of color and her message is one of HOPE and UNITY for America at her time of great national divide."

And in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter via his spokesperson, legendary actor Robert De Niro said: "In an act of shrewd politics and selfless patriotism, Joe Biden is stepping aside to clear the path for another Democrat to become president ... because there is nothing more important for our country than defeating Donald Trump at the ballot box.

"With respect, admiration, and affection, thank you Mr. President!”

"Joe Biden has a record of accomplishments unmatched by any president in our lifetime," tweeted Star Wars actor Mark Hamill. "He restored honesty, dignity & integrity to the office after 4 years of lies, crime, scandal & chaos. Thank you for your service, Mr. President. It's now our duty as patriotic Americans to elect the Democrat who will honor & further your legacy.

Many other stars voiced their concerns, such as Deadpool star Gina Carano, who tweeted: "Who is running the country right now? We the people need answers.

"National security should be at an all time high. We are in an intensely vulnerable state."

And X owner Elon Musk told his followers: "I heard last week that he would resign at this exact time and date. It was widespread knowledge in DC. The real powers that be are discarding the old puppet in favor of one that has a better chance of fooling the public."

With many celebrities coming out in support of Kamala Harris to be named the Democratic presidential nominee, the Vice President has thanked Biden for his endorsement of her, adding that her "intention is to earn and win this nomination."
