Joe Biden has branded Donald Trump one of the "most incompetent presidents in the history of the United States of America".

In response to the outgoing president's tweet from his now-permanently suspended Twitter account that he would not be attending the inauguration, the president-elect told reporters in Wilmington, Delaware it was a "good thing".

Yesterday, Trump wrote: "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th."

According to Biden, this was one of the few things he and the Republican president agreed on, before stating Trump had "embarrassed" the US around the world and was "not fit to serve".

Biden said: "He has exceeded even my worst notions about him."

The president-elect continued: "There are two ways people are inspired - by inspirational leaders and by terrible leaders.

"What this president has done is ripped the bandage right off to let the country know who he is and what he's about, and how thoroughly unfit for office he is."

Mr Biden also said that there are many Republicans who should be "ashamed of themselves" while adding: "But they make up a minority of the Republican party."

Joe Biden calls Donald Trump one of the "most incompetent presidents" in US history:

"This isn't about Republican-Democrat anymore. This is about people who understand what this country is about and the things we have to agree on and move together on," he said per Sky News.

The president-elect also explained that Republicans he has spoken to recently know that they need to form an opposition party that is "principled and strong".

He said some members of the party have also discussed how "shameful" it is that other Republicans such as Ted Cruz have continued to support Trump.

Biden stated his belief that those who carry on showing their support for the president following his recent actions, should be "flat-beaten" the next time they run for office, adding: "I think the American public has had a real good clear look at who they are."

Per Sky News, he had also earlier said he believes the individuals responsible for the death of a police officer in the Capitol building on Wednesday should be held accountable.

Brian Sicknick sustained fatal injuries when a violent mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol. Five people died amid the chaos.
