A South Carolina man has won custody of his own daughter after she was adopted without his permission.

WACH Fox57 reported that Christopher Emanuel's daughter, Skyler, was put up for adoption by his girlfriend without his knowledge or consent.

"I was lost… I was hurt, I was confused because I wanted to ensure that I could be there for my child," Emanuel told the station.

Christopher had filed to be listed as Skyler's father on the state's responsible fatherhood registry, which was meant to notify him if she was put up for adoption.

The registry was created for unwed fathers to let the state know that they have had a child.

As per ABC15, Pat Littlejohn, President of South Carolina Center for Fathers and Families, said: "Before rights are terminated to allow an adoption to occur attorneys as well as the department of social services will check this registry and if his name is on there he must be notified."

However, when a Southern Carolina family filed to adopted Skyler, he was not listed on her paperwork despite being listed as Skyler's father with the registry.

"I didn't know if I would ever see her again," Emanuel said.

He was then forced to start a court battle in Aiken County - where she was born - in order to get her back.

"This was my opportunity to prove that I was deprived of that my constitution and state rights were violated," Emanuel said.

"My daughter was in San Diego, CA with the prospective adoptive couple where her name is changed. I have medical documentation calling my daughter another name and she was never legally adopted," he added.

The news outlet reported that after a year-long battle, Christoper was finally granted custody of his daughter again.

"Aiken County Judicial Center, this is where it went down at. But when I'm here being in this space, it fills me with joy, I feel safe because Aiken County brought my daughter home where she belongs," Emanuel said.

As a result of the incident, ABC15 reports that Christopher has founded the Sky Is The Limit Foundation, which sees him travel around the US to educate fathers about their parental rights.
