Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell - the top Republican in the Senate - has congratulated Joe Biden on winning the 2020 presidential election.

McConnell, 78, acknowledged on Tuesday (December 15) that Joe Biden is the rightful president-elect, following the Electoral College vote that officially certified Biden's win on Monday.

Per NBC News, McConnell made the comments on the Senate floor, in a speech that was focused on praising President Donald Trump's achievements.

"The Electoral College has spoken. So today, I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden," McConnell said.

Other Republican senators have also followed suit, such as Sen. John Barrasso, of Wyoming, who said in a statement:

"I was proud to join thousands of people in Wyoming in voting for President Trump. I believe he’s the leader our country needs. I also respect the result of the Electoral College vote today."

As reported by CNN, McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, also touted Trump's presidency while speaking in the past tense - but did hail the Trump administration's "economic prosperity," "foreign policy," judicial appointments, and "bold regulatory changes".

McConnell added: "It would take far more than one speech to catalog all the major wins the Trump administration has helped deliver for the American people.

"The outsider who swore he would shake up Washington and lead our country to new accomplishments, both at home and abroad proceeded to do exactly that. President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence deserve our thanks and our gratitude for their tireless work and their essential roles in all these victories and in many more."
