A mother who gave birth while intubated as a result of Covid-19 has finally brought her baby home - and has named her nurse as the godmother to her child.
Monique Jones of Ferguson, Missouri, gave birth to her daughter, Zamyrah, through a c-section to save her daughter's life at 29 weeks gestation.
The decision to carry out the operation on September 23 was made after the 28-year-old tested positive for Covid-19 on September 4.
"It was possible that I wouldn't live - that's all I was thinking," Jones told Good Morning America. "They asked me if it was possible to take my baby out. At first, I told them no, but I wasn't getting any better."
"I am happy and grateful that I'm still here but at the same time it's still overwhelming," she added.
More on this incredible story in the video below:Prior to being diagnosed with Covid-19, Jones had experienced chills and a shortness of breath, despite rarely leaving her home during her pregnancy and only going outside to grocery shop - all while practicing good hand hygiene and wearing a mask.
In her interview with GMA, intensive care nurse Caitlyn Obrock said that Jones was intubated at the hospital on September 6, and she was nervous about her situation.
"She was scared," Obrock said. "I was very invested in her, hoping and praying for a good outcome."
Jones woke up at the beginning of October and was transferred to a rehabilitation facility to receive occupational, speech, and physical therapy.
Obrock explained that while it is not typical for nurses to keep in touch with their patients, she made an exception with Jones, with whom she developed a special bond.
She raised $2,000 in baby gifts while Jones underwent rehab and her colleagues even held a baby shower for her.
"It was to boost her morale," Obrock said. "The way she started out motherhood with this baby was unfair and we wanted her to know how special and loved she is."
Zamyrah was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital after her birth and remained there until December 10.
But she is now home with mom, dad Jamez Prewitt, and big sister Damiea, six, and Jones recently decided to pay tribute to her ICU nurse by asking her to be Zamyrah's godmother.
The family is now hoping to celebrate with the nurse as soon as it is safe to do so.
"She's a miracle," Obrock said of Jones. "Her and her baby."
