As reported by the New York Post, the distressing incident occurred around 2:00PM on Wednesday (November 6) at Goat Island, located at the precipice of Horseshoe Falls — the largest of the trio that composes the famed Niagara Falls.
Witnesses on the scene described seeing the unidentified woman in the waters just above the falls, sparking an urgent response.
"An immediate search of the area commenced using Park Police drone, foot searches of the gorge, and visual searches from overlooks," state police detailed in a statement to WGRZ.

The operation soon expanded, with New York State Police Aviation called in to assist, scouring the turbulent lower Niagara River.
This incident unfurls just one week after a tragic event in the same vicinity, where Chianti Means - a 33-year-old mother from the local area - plunged into the river from Luna Park near the falls' crest.
Police confirmed that they believe Means took her own life "intentionally" after climbing over the barricades of the popular tourist destination at around 8:00PM on October 28.
Means, a domestic violence counselor, has apparently been struggling with postpartum depression, her family members say.
She tragically went over the famous falls with her two young children — a 9-year-old and a 5-month-old. Despite exhaustive efforts, the bodies of Means and her children have yet to be recovered.
