A Maryland firefighter has been hailed a "true public servant" after helping to rescue somebody trapped in a car while also fighting labor contractions.
The Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Rescue and Marine honored career firefighter Megan Warfield for her selfless efforts earlier this month.
Warfield - who was nine months pregnant and "just a week or so shy of her due date" - was traveling home with her mother after hosting a golf tournament in honor of her late father.
However, during the journey, she became involved in a multi-car collision, which led to her experiencing labor contractions. But rather than tend to herself, Warfield told TODAY that she jumped out of her vehicle in order to help direct traffic.
It was then that she noticed that a car was overturned with another woman trapped inside.
Warfield told TODAY: "I started to climb in there with her, but then I was like, 'What are you doing? You’re nine months pregnant.' I ended up holding onto her to keep her in place because I wasn’t sure of her injuries at the time.
"It was also important that I keep her calm," Warfield added. "It was a pretty traumatic event."
Once paramedics arrived at the scene, Warfield decided that it would be best to go to the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore to receive a check-up. What she didn't know was that the crash had not only induced labor, but also knocked her unborn baby into a traverse position (where the baby's head is on one side of the mother's body and the feet on the other).
"I must've just been running on adrenaline," the mom said.
Less than 24 hours after the crash, Warfield and her boyfriend, Joshua, welcomed a healthy baby girl on October 4.
The couple named their baby daughter Charlotte. She now joins her older siblings, six-year-old Ellie and five-year-old Jameson.
(In another fun twist to this story, boyfriend Joshua was actually one of the first responders who arrived at the scene of the crash.)
In a Facebook post, Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Rescue and Marine honored Warfield's heroic actions, writing: "Everyone, meet Megan, a true public servant.
"Megan is a member of the BQVFD and also a career firefighter with Baltimore County, MD. Megan has been serving in an administrative capacity for the past several months patiently waiting on the birth of her child.
"Just a week or so shy of her due date, Megan had just finished organizing and hosting her late father's 2nd annual memorial golf tournament when she was involved in a significant motor vehicle collision.
"Ignoring any chance she could be injured, Megan immediately exited her mangled vehicle and began providing care to a person trapped by their overturned car. Megan stayed with this patient until Squad 213 arrived to free the victim."
"The post continues: "After all patients were evaluated, Megan agreed to an evaluation herself.
"Less then 24 hours later, Megan delivered her beautiful baby girl.
"Since no good deed should go unrecognized, we wanted to highlight Megan's heroic and selfess actions. Congratulations Momma Megan, Job Well Done!"
What an incredible story!
