The Trump White House faced a wave of criticism on Tuesday after promoting a service that allows Americans to request personalized messages from the president.
Many will be familiar with similar services, with platforms such as Cameo and Memmo giving customers access to their idolised Z-list celebrities, who offer individualized greetings to those prepared to foot the fee… and it appears that Donald Trump is set to provide a similar offering.
In a post on X, officials spotlighted the presidential greetings program, which lets people ask Donald Trump to send messages for “meaningful moments” like births, birthdays, graduations, weddings, and retirements.
The post, which quickly gained traction on X, was accompanied by: “Celebrate life’s most meaningful moments with a message from the President.”
The X post also included a picture of Trump scribing, as well as a link to the website on which requests can be submitted. The website itself includes a quote from Trump himself, along with a selection of occasions to choose from.
Currently, there are no pricing details listed on the request site, so a message from the President appears to be free to receive.
Although similar services have been offered by past administrations, critics quickly used the post to highlight some of Trump’s past controversies.
These included accusations of hypocrisy over his criticism of Joe Biden’s use of an autopen, as well as reports about a provocative birthday drawing he allegedly sent to the late, disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The reaction online was largely negative. Some users called on the White House to prioritize economic concerns, while others were more direct in their criticism.
Responses on X included comments like: "I'm not interested unless the message is his resignation", "There's nothing meaningful about anything he says.", and "Is he gonna be scribbling all day or using an autopen?"
Other responses were even more scathing of Trump, with one user posting a graphic displaying the words: “Trump can f**k off”.
While another X profile quipped: “Donald Trump really cares for people, yes he must get stimulus checks to people, yes he must eradicate poverty, yes he must hire 20 million people. But he’s going to write you a handwritten note and that’s very special.”
