Here's what will happen to Melania if Donald Trump dies in office
Here's what will happen to Melania if Donald Trump passes away while in office.
In 2024, the 79-year-old was the target of a failed assassination attempt, and in the following two years, he has been seen displaying troubling signs of physical distress, such as bruised hands and swollen legs.
These incidents have raised concerns, leading many to wonder: What would happen if the president were to suddenly die while in office?
What Would Happen To Melania If Trump Dies in Office?
If Trump were to pass, the US Constitution, reinforced by the 25th Amendment, makes it clear that Vice President JD Vance would assume the presidency immediately.
The 42-year-old would become the youngest president in US history, surpassing Theodore Roosevelt.
He would have the power to keep or replace Cabinet members and would need to nominate a new vice president, subject to approval by both the House and the Senate.
While the political transition is simple, the emotional and personal ramifications for Melania Trump would be far more complicated.
The 55-year-old would face difficult choices regarding her public and private life in the aftermath of her husband's death.
A source close to the First Lady previously shared with PEOPLE that she "couldn’t care less how she looks politically," and that "she doesn't believe she has obligations in the political world," suggesting that she might not feel obligated to play a prominent political role if tragedy were to strike.
Moreover, her lack of response following Trump’s assassination attempt in 2024 raised eyebrows, with the president himself commenting on his wife’s behavior in an interview with The Ingraham Angle on Fox News.
"She can't really even talk about it, which is okay, because that means she likes me or she loves me," he said at the time. "Let's say if she could talk about it freely, that would be, I'm not so sure which is better, but she either likes or loves me, that's nice."
Historically, First Ladies have played significant roles during presidential funerals.
After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy was involved in organizing her husband's funeral, even selecting his final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery.
It remains to be seen whether Melania would have a hands-on role if she were faced with a similar situation.
However, she would most likely face the public pressure of stepping aside from her role as First Lady, similar to how Jackie moved out of the White House just days after JFK's assassination.
Trump Assures Public
Despite the ongoing speculation on his physical and mental well-being, Trump has reassured the public that he doesn't have any cognitive decline, claiming that he underwent a CT scan to rule out heart issues.
In addition to this, he attributed his swollen ankles to chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in people over 70, during an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
But not everyone is convinced, as conspiracy theorist Alex Jones recently suggested that the president may be in danger of heart failure. "He’s gone. And that’s it," Jones stated. "Trump needs intervention. He needs to take some time off.
"They’re being loyal... They think it’s a lesser of two evils. And I, okay, but I just…Trump needs intervention. He needs to take some time off," he added.
The White House quickly rebuffed these claims, with spokesperson Davis Ingle calling the rumors "a complete bulls**t story" designed to boost podcast views.
"The truth is that President Trump is the sharpest and most accessible President in American history who is working nonstop to solve problems and deliver on his promises," Ingle insisted.
