Residents of a small town in Maine were left terrified and banded together to uncover the truth after spotting a huge furry creature strolling the streets wearing a hat and resembling a folklore legend, Bigfoot.
On September 1, cops in Damariscotta, Maine said they received an “unusually high number of calls” reporting sightings of Bigfoot.
Bizarrely, the hairy giant was spotted in at least five locations across town. Bigfoot was pictured in a supermarket and waving petrified children to school.
Reassuring residents that the creature is not something to be scared of, it reportedly asked passing trucks to honk their horns and sported a comical top hat.
Damariscotta Police Chief Erik Josephson assured locals in a Facebook post that cops had carried out a “lengthy, exhaustive, and completely serious investigation” following the recent sightings.
Bigfoot is supposedly an ape-like creature said to live in the forests of North America, whose name originated in 1958, when construction workers found 16-inch human-like footprints. It is typically described as very tall, covered in dark hair, and leaving unusually large footprints, but there is no scientific evidence that it exists.
Thankfully, and perhaps unsurprisingly to sharper Damariscotta residents, the investigation found that it was just a man in a very heavy costume.
In what was a disappointment to some but relief to others, Josephson declared that “Bigfoot is not real,” and the creature was just a man playing an elaborate prank.
Josephson said: “Despite our best efforts to gather compelling evidence, not a single Bigfoot grunt was heard.
“Frankly, there were members of our department who were secretly hoping we had finally stumbled upon something that would make national news.”
When officer William Smith found the “elusive creature” sitting on Main Street, he sat down and had a “great conversation” with him as excited locals interrupted to ask for photos with the friendly beast.
Although no decade-defining scientific discovery was made, residents of the town and social media users from outside found it a great source of comedy and entertainment.
One resident wrote: “You can tell we live in a small town”.
Another person joked that the man “looked more like a large Yorkshire terrier.”
Instead of being frustrated at residents for reporting a mythical creature, cops noted that the community’s sense of unity during the sightings was heartwarming and uncommon these days.
They said: “A town full of people willing to stop what they’re doing to investigate a Bigfoot sighting and keep each other safe… honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
