Twisted images of registered sex offender, 29, who was busted trying to enroll in high school as teen girl for second time
A 29-year-old registered sex offender has been arrested after allegedly posing as a homeless teenage girl to enroll in high school.
Makayla Craig is facing three felony charges after allegedly trying to register at Maple Grove High School in Minnesota as a 17-year-old girl.
According to CBS News, a criminal complaint states that Craig had previously been sentenced for a similar incident in Oregon, where the registered sex offender tried to enroll in high school while claiming to be just 15 years old.
He was arrested this week and is being held in the Hennepin County Jail.
School staff raised concerns over suspicious enrollment
The investigation began on Monday after a concerned school staff member called the police after becoming suspicious about someone trying to enroll at the school.
The person completed paperwork under a different name, saying they were a homeless 17-year-old from Oregon with no identification.
The applicant also cited the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a federal law that provides funding and legal protections to support individuals and children experiencing homelessness, and insisted on immediate enrollment.
Due to a lack of identification, the person was initially enrolled in an online program. However, the Maple Grove Police Department later clarified that Craig "never completed enrollment with Maple Grove Senior High School, and he was never present on campus as a student or in any online classes".
During questioning, Craig allegedly told authorities that he had never attended school and planned to attend in person to "get the full experience," per The New York Post.
The department praised the school staff "for their alertness with the incident, quick action to notify a school resource officer, and collaboration in the investigation".
Craig previously attempted to enroll as a 15-year-old girl
The Minnesota case is not the first time Craig has faced allegations over false identification and high school enrollment.
Back in 2024, the suspect emailed a school in Oregon, claiming to be a 15-year-old homeless girl named Madison.
Administrators noticed something was off when he showed up at the school headquarters and alerted law enforcement, which prompted an investigation.
In 2025, Craig was sentenced to 20 days in jail and ordered to stay 500 feet away from schools.
Prosecutors argued at the sentencing that the man, who is a registered sex offender, was trying to pose as a juvenile "to be involved with other juveniles in the high school system".
The 29-year-old's sex offender status comes after he was convicted of third-degree sexual abuse in May 2023 with a minor and was sentenced to three years’ probation. He was also barred from contacting children during that time.
Craig faces three felony charges
Following his recent arrest, Craig was charged with two counts of aggravated forgery and one count of forgery, all felonies.
At a hearing on Friday, a judge set bail at $200,000 without conditions, or $100,000 with conditions.
Those conditions are having no contact with minor children, staying at least three blocks from schools, having no contact with Maple Grove High School, and obeying the law.
Craig's next court appearance is scheduled for November 18.
