A four-month-old baby has been left in a coma after her grandmother used wine to dilute his powdered milk.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the baby was rushed to the hospital after his grandmother - who is from Francavilla Fontana in the southern Italian province of Brindisi - accidentally mistook a wine bottle for a dark-colored glass water bottle when preparing the milk.

She then proceeded to feed the baby around midday on Monday, but was forced to stop when he kept rejecting the bottle after initially taking a few sips.

She soon realized that something was not right, and after giving the bottle a little sniff, she rushed her grandson to Perrino Hospital where he was treated as an emergency case.

According to local reports, doctors did their best to pump the infant's stomach, getting rid of as much of the remaining fluid from inside of him. The baby boy was then intubated and transferred to the intensive care unit of the Giovanni Pediatric Hospital in Bari.

He now remains in an ethyl coma, which is a coma that was induced by alcohol poisoning, but is said to be in stable condition, per the Daily Mail.

Local media outlets also added that his condition is said to be improving.

The police are now investigating the incident to determine whether to press charges against the grandmother for her careless actions, though no outcome has been confirmed as of yet.

This isn't the first time we've seen an incident like this lead to the involvement of authorities.

Back in 2021, two women in Edinburgh, Scotland faced charges related to child protection after being filmed giving a distressed child wine.

Yahoo! News reported that the pair ended up taking a lesser charge due to a lack of evidence against them.

During sentencing, Sheriff Noble said: "Plainly you have pled guilty to a charge which is much different to the charge you originally faced. You have each pled guilty to a charge of threatening and abusive behavior essentially involving the creation of a video appearing to show (the mom's child) drinking alcohol although there is no suggestion it was, in fact, alcohol she was given to drink."

Both women confessed to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner by manufacturing the video and apologized for causing members of the public to be "concerned and distressed" by the clip.
