When it comes to freebies, very few people will turn down the chance to get something for nothing. Whether it's a complimentary sample of food in the supermarket, or a coupon for half-off that thing you weren't even planning on buying in the first place, most of us are more than happy to accept something for free.
So, when one young woman offered "free sex" to thousands of people, she got a lot of responses.
Miss Ye, a 19-year-old blogger with a substantial social media following, caused chaos last week when she advertised some no-strings nookie to anyone who was willing to show up at her hotel room. "Who's coming to get me...to have sex...for free," she wrote in the now-deleted post.
Ye included the address and room number of the hotel she was staying at in the post, which went out at about 8 pm. Unsurprisingly, the responses came flooding in, and within less than an hour she had a real problem on her hands.
Double Tree by Hilton, the hotel that Ye was staying in, confirmed that the blogger had checked into her room at about 3pm, and began receiving guests later on in the evening. Numerous people are said to have knocked on her door in the hopes of taking up her online offer, and the hotel's concierge reported receiving multiple phone calls asking for details about the guest in room 6316 - Ye's accommodation for the night.
Videos soon emerged of men who were making their way to the hotel, with some getting as far as her door.
"I'm on my way to room 6316, hahahahhaha, and here I am!" said one hopeful guy who had filmed his journey.
Other people who had seen the original post uploaded pictures of Ye's door number to WeChat, a Chinese instant messaging app, and reported that there were several people queuing outside the room.
Other web users posted pictures of the door sign on WeChat, a Chinese instant messaging app, and said they were queuing outside the room.
However, by this point, Ye had realized that it hadn't been such a good idea to post the invitation and - fearing for her safety - she commented on her message to say that it was a mistake. Claiming it was only a joke, she begged her fans and followers to ignore the post and leave her alone.
Unfortunately, the damage was already done, and the young blogger was kicked out of the room at 10 pm. Hotel staff had to escort her out and make sure she got into a taxi, but she was later apprehended by police at an airport and arrested for prostitution.
It has since been established that Ye deliberately posted the message online with the intention to attract more followers, and her account was subsequently deactivated as a result of her actions. In addition to being humiliated by the whole experience, the teenager was given a 15-day detention and a 500 yuan ($79) fine for her behavior.
Fortunately for her, she was not harmed during the ordeal.
