Tragic discovery made at family home of Polish gunman who killed 6 people in Krakow tourist square
Authorities have made a harrowing discovery after searching the family home of the suspect in a horrific shooting in Krakow, Poland.
Local publications have identified the shooter as 'Michal O.', and he is accused of opening fire at several locations in Krakow's historic Main Square on Saturday (November 7).
He reportedly drove around the tourist hotspot in a black Subaru, firing at people who were running for cover, before police shot and wounded him, subsequently taking him into custody.
Among the deceased were four women and two men, including three Polish nationals and a British citizen, as at least 15 others were left injured.
The masked attacker can be seen being apprehended by police officers in a video that has been broadcast by news outlets, as six shots are fired at him from a close distance before his weapons are confiscated.
Police released a statement after making the arrest, writing on X: "Police officers confronted an armed attacker. They did not hesitate, even though they themselves were in mortal danger,
“This is what police service is all about. Courage, responsibility and a willingness to act even when your own life is at stake.”
Later that afternoon, police would make another horrible discovery.
The suspect's family was found dead
The alleged gunman's dad, 53, mom, 52, and younger sister, 21, were found dead in the family’s apartment in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, 93 miles northeast of Krakow.
Police made the discovery just before 10PM on Saturday, as per Świętokrzyskie Province police.
The three family members sustained what were believed to be gunshot wounds, as seven firearms were seized from the apartment.
According to Polish outlet Fakt, the alleged shooter's sister, who lived in Krakow, was visiting her parents when the incident unfolded.
Police release statement after finding family's bodies
After confirming the ages of the victims and that they were related to the shooter, police added in an update on Facebook: "Injuries were revealed on the bodies, which were preliminarily assessed as gunshot wounds.
"The bodies were secured for detailed examinations. Seven weapons were secured in the apartment.
"Operations involving police counter-terrorism officers, technicians, and a prosecutor took place on site throughout the night.
"For safety reasons, residents of the block were evacuated during the ongoing operations. After they were completed, residents could return to their apartments.
"Our actions are not limited to the apartment where the body was found. The searches are ongoing," they concluded.
Neighbors recall how the family were
Zdzisław Szostak told Fakt that the family were 'normal people', and that the suspected shooter was 'silent'.
He added: “He’s a bit strange. He never talked. When he remembered, which was rare, he’d say hello. And he had his hood pulled over his head. I’ve never seen him in camouflage.”
The alleged shooter's mother was a cashier at a grocery store.
Szostak said that while the 24-year-old had several weapons, he thought they were used at a shooting range, adding: “It didn’t seem dangerous to me.”
Police have called for AB Rh-positive blood donations for Senior Constable Jakub Kulik, who, along with Constable Artur Morański, confronted the gunman.
Kulik, who used to serve as a soldier in the country’s 6th Airborne Brigade, was shot three times in the confrontation, and police say one of his lungs is no longer functioning as he continues 'fighting for his life in hospital.'
