Over the years, there have been some pretty strange fashion trends that have appeared on social media, and wowed internet-users for a week, before disappearing forever.

We're forever rolling our eyes at some of the concepts touted by fashion designers, who seem to be convinced that they've created the latest stylistic innovation instead of a terrible eyesore.

For example; there are denim high-heel-jeans combos, leather socks, pre-ripped pantyhose, crocks with socks attached, and many many more deliberately tasteless sartorial faux pas. But now we might well have stumbled upon the daddy of them all: clear plastic shorts for men.

Yes, you heard me correctly: clear plastic shorts for men, made out of the exact same material used for those impeccably-cool transparent raincoats that are so popular at music festivals. The difference here is, these babies give you an unvarnished look at the wearer's junk and speedos. Classy.

The eccentric garment - or the 'Berlin Transparent Waterproof Beach Short' to give it its full title, is the brainchild of beachwear brand MaverickSwim, and is currently being told by them for just $26.99 (£23 for you Brits out there).

On MarerickSwim's official online store, the product's item description states proudly: "The next generation of transparent beach shorts is here!"

It adds: "Berlin waterproof transparent shorts lime are completely see-through and leave it totally up to you if you wanna wear a colourful statement speedo underneath or just go bare for fun! The polyester shorts come with neon lining that makes you pop out of the crowds! Exclusive limited edition - get yours now! [sic]"

The shorts are made out of polyester, and come in two sizes: a medium, for a waist size of 76 - 88 centimetres, or a  large waist size ranging from 86 - 100 centimetres.

So what do you guys think? Are these shorts the last word in beachwear? Or should they be left hanging? I guess it all depends on how comfortable you are with your crotch being on show. Personally, I'm going to give them a miss...
