The heartwrenching final words of a young girl who died after being trapped in volcanic mudflow for 60 hours have been revealed.
Omayra Sánchez Garzón was just 13 when she tragically passed away after a landslide caused by the 1985 eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Armero, Colombia, destroyed her neighborhood.
After the eruption, a deadly mixture of volcanic lava and ice - called lahar - rushed into the river valleys before entering the villages and killing around 20,000 out of the 29,000 residents, as reported by The Mirror.
On the night of the disaster, Omayra's family was awake, fearing the upcoming eruption and volcanic ash. Suddenly, they heard the rush of the impending lahar and it quickly hit the concrete home.
Trapped under the roof, the 13-year-old was only discovered when her hand was able to slip through a crack that was spotted by a rescue worker.
Despite the divers' several attempts to free the young girl, there was nothing they could do as her legs were caught under a brick door, with her deceased aunt's arms clutched tightly around her legs and feet, per The Sun.
Each time someone tried to free her, more water pooled around her, which made it seem as if she would drown if they let her go. So, rescue workers placed a tire around her to keep her afloat.
The brave girl remained mostly calm throughout her horrific plight. Her predicament was recorded by journalists, TV crews, and Red Cross workers, as well as onlookers who gave her sweet food and soda cans.
Omayra often spoke to journalists while singing, but by the third night, she experienced a hallucination, telling those around her that she shouldn't be late for her math exam.
Her eyes had now become so bloodshot that they looked black, while her hands had whitened and her face had swelled.
Before closing her eyes for one last time, Omayra shared her final heartbreaking words for the whole world to hear.
