Caitlyn Jenner has sparked fury online after publically stating that she opposes trans girls taking part in female sports.
Speaking to a TMZ reporter, the former Olympic decathlete said the issue of whether or not transgender girls should be allowed to play sports alongside their cisgender teammates is a "question of fairness."
Jenner, 71, went on to say: "That's why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls' sports in school. It just isn't fair, and we have to protect girls' sports in our schools."
However, when questioned further about her views potentially "delegitimizing" the identity of trans girls, the reality star swiftly brought the exchange to an end.
Check out what she had to say here:A number of people - ordinary and prominent figures alike - have since taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star's controversial stance.
Transgender actress Trace Lysette took issue with Jenner's views, writing: "Cait... this ain’t it. When you’re on hormones and or blockers there is not an advantage. I ran track at the club level with college girls and trust me there is no advantage.
"I would have went pro if I was able to run the times I ran before hormones etc."
Others slammed the wealthy socialite for allowing her privilege to cloud her judgment, with one writing: "Caitlyn Jenner is so smothered in privilege, so distant from the struggles of other trans people, that her experience of transness is almost nothing like anyone else's.
"This is never going to impact her. and her past as a pro athlete just highlights that privilege even more."
Another wrote: "Caitlyn Jenner is such a traitor and what she’s doing is a big slap in the face to all the trans women that rallied around and supported her. It really be your own!"
Jenner later took to Twitter to reaffirm that she is "clear about where [she] stand[s]" on the issue. She then went on to repeat that "it's an issue of fairness and we need to protect girls' sports in our schools."
This comes after the Republican announced last month that she is running for governor of California in a bid to replace Democrat Gavin Newsom.

Back in April 2017, many members of the LGBT+ community were shocked to learn that Caitlyn Jenner had voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election.
Defending her decision, the retired Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete insisted her loyalty was with both the Republican party and her community, and claimed she would continue to fight for transgender people, while also sticking to her own political beliefs.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, on Thursday the transgender celebrity admitted she'd been wrong to vote for the former reality TV star.

Writing an opinion piece in The Washington Post, Jenner hit out at the controversial Republican president, declaring he had insulted the transgender community's dignity.
The 68-year-old wrote: "He has ignored our humanity. He has insulted our dignity. He has made trans people into political pawns as he whips up animus against us in an attempt to energize the most right-wing segment of his party."
Having previously expressed hopes of working with Trump and Republican policymakers, the father-of-six confessed she was mistaken, putting: "Sadly, I was wrong. The reality is that the trans community is being relentlessly attacked by this president."
Jenner, who is rumoured to be in a relationship with transgender model, Sophia Hutchins, continued: "It is unacceptable, it is upsetting, and it has deeply, personally hurt me. It's clear these policies have come directly from Trump. I cannot support anyone who is working against our community. I do not support Trump. I must learn from my mistakes and move forward."
In her piece, the famed athlete said she now knows she needs to listen and learn from more members of the transgender community in the future.
"I am more determined than ever to find the best way to bring trans issues to the fore of our social and political conversation, domestically and abroad," she wrote. "I need to better use my voice, my privilege and my foundation to advocate for and support our community."

Her rejection of President Trump comes after a report this week alleged that the former billionaire businessman's administration was aiming to create a narrow definition of gender by law.
According to The New York Times, under the proposal, 'gender' would mean being only male or female and would be unchangeable once it is determined at birth.
After the newspaper claimed that the Department of Health and Human Services was circulating a memo proposing that gender be defined as an "immutable biological condition determined by a person's sex organs at birth", Jenner bit back.
In a statement given to People, she said: "The Trump administration has ferociously attacked my community again. Just as an FYI Mr. President— the military is the single largest employer of trans people in the world. This leaked memo is an unacceptable attack on my community. We will not be erased!"
The father-of-six's opinion piece is likely to please many members of the transgender community who felt betrayed in the election. Only two months ago, Jenner was ambushed by a trans woman over her support for Trump.

During his run for president, Caitlyn Jenner was an outspoken advocate for Donald Trump. Despite warnings that the soon-to-be president was dangerously misogynistic and reportedly anti-LGBTQ, Jenner - who is a transwoman - stood by him, and even went so far as to unofficially endorse him in some interviews.
"Everybody looks at the Democrats as being better with these issues. But Trump seems to be very much for women," she said in an interview two years ago. "He seems very much behind the LGBT community ... he backed the LGBT community."
However, her support for the president began to slip when he announced that transgender people would no longer be permitted to serve in the military (something that never went ahead, as it turned out, because Trump had made the claim without consulting any officials on the matter), and, after his administration revoked the trans bathroom bill, she publicly called him out.

Now, she's put him on blast for being the "worst ever" president when it comes to LGBTQ rights.
"As far as trans issues, this administration has been the worst ever," the former Athlete said in an interview with Newsweek. "They’ve set our community back 20 years, easily. It’s going to be hard to change, but we’ve been through these types of things before and we’ll continue to fight it."
Jenner then went on to say that Trump has to "do a better job when it comes to equality."
"We’re all Americans," she said. "I think of it this way: We have diversity in mankind, humankind. We have diversity all over the place, diversity in the way people look, diversity in religion, diversity in skin color. Wouldn’t it be a dull world if everybody was the same?"
And yet, she still maintains her allegiance to the Republican party - many prominent members of which are staunchly homophobic and transphobic.
When asked if she ever confronted Trump face-to-face over the trans bathroom bill issue, she said: "I did come back to the inauguration to meet people. And out of that I have built some very nice and good relationships with the Republican Party, but I have not been back to see Trump."
Understandably, this angered a lot of people on Twitter.

In just the first year of his presidency, Trump certainly made a lot of anti-LGBTQ - and, in particular, anti-trans - moves. As well as supporting the attempted military ban and reversal of the bathroom bill, Trump's administration has nominated anti-LGBTQ people to official positions, failed to recognize Pride Month, and has made it clear that they support queer discrimination in the workplace (meaning that a person can legally be fired for their sexuality or gender identity).
And who could forget the time Trump joked that Mike Pence wanted to murder LGBTQ people? Last year, during a discussion about LGBTQ rights, the president pointed to Pence and joked: "Don’t ask that guy—he wants to hang them all!"
To anybody - trans or otherwise - these things should have been a clear indication that Trump had no intention of assisting the LGBTQ community. And, while it's good that Jenner has finally seen the error of her ways (sort of), many people still consider her actions to be too little, too late.

Caitlyn Jenner reportedly took part in a women's golf tournament - in spite of her views that trans girls should stay out of female sports.
According to Indy100, Jenner, 71, competed in a tournament in which she was driving from the women's tees, whereby golfers are closer to the flag.
The publication goes on to state that she competed in the ANA Inspiration Pro-Am in Rancho Mirage, California in 2016.
The women's tee ultimately won the tournament and Jenner - a former Olympic decathlete - began each hole considerably closer to the flag.
Considering her apparent views on transgender women in sports, her involvement in the tournament sparked debate amongst some people on social media.
One person shared an article on the 2016 sports event, writing: "Something tells me she doesn't really believe the things she says to try to get Republicans to vote for her."
Others branded the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star a hypocrite, with a different critic writing: "A hypocrite running under the GOP banner? How could this possibly be?"
A third wrote: "I'm convinced that famous people, politicians, and anyone with fame gets the flash thing from MIB every morning cause they seem to contradict themselves on damn near daily basis."
Jenner's alleged involvement in the tournament would have come years before she publically stated that she opposes trans girls taking part in female sports.
The reality star made the remarks over the weekend telling TMZ it's a "question of fairness".
She told the publication: "That's why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls' sports in school. It just isn't fair, and we have to protect girls' sports in our schools."
However, when the reporter implied that her views might "delegitimize" the identity of trans girls, the reality star decided to bring the conversation to an abrupt end.

Fox News has a new commentator - Caitlyn Jenner.
The Olympic champion and reality TV star will be joining the channel as a paid contributor, with her first appearance scheduled for Sean Hannity's program on Thursday.
Fox News Media CEP Suzanne Scott said that Jenner - who is a transgender woman - was an inspirational voice and a "trailblazer" in the LGBTQ+ community, per MailOnline.
"Caitlyn’s story is an inspiration to us all," she said. "She is a trailblazer in the LGBTQ+ community and her illustrious career spans a variety of fields that will be a tremendous asset for our audience."
Jenner, 72, also celebrated the news on her Instagram page, where she posted a snap of herself appearing on Fox alongside the caption: "I am humbled by this unique opportunity to speak directly to @foxnews millions of viewers about a range of issues that are important to the American people."
On Twitter, she was welcomed to the Fox News family by her new colleagues. "Congrats and welcome aboard," tweeted Tammy Bruce, while Tomi Lahren wrote:Proud to welcome @Caitlyn_Jenner to the FoxNews family. She is a kind and wonderful human who fights harder for freedom and American values than most."
The former Olympic decathlete is considered a polarizing figure by many in the LGBTQ community thanks to her often conservative views.
Last year, she campaigned as a Republican to be elected Governor of California, but was defeated by incumbent democrat Gov Gavin Newsom, and finished 13th in the recall election.
More recently, she weighed in on the controversy around transgender athletes, giving her opinion on University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas - a trans woman who won the women's NCAA Championships. Despite being a trans woman herself, Jenner agreed with Florida Gov Ron DeSantis that silver medalist Emma Weyant was the real winner of the tournament.
"[Emma] is the rightful winner! It’s not transphobic or anti-trans, it’s COMMON SENSE!" Jenner tweeted.
Long before she came out as transgender in 2015, Jenner had an illustrious athletic career. She won a gold medal in the decathlon at the 1976 Olympics.
