A young woman has been left with life-changing injuries after a routine visit to her chiropractor.
As reported by news.com.au, Caitlin Jensen - a recent graduate of Georgia Southern University - attended her appointment for a simple chiropractic adjustment back on June 16.
However, her family says the routine visit left her fighting for her life, after Caitlin suffered four dissected arteries in her neck.
The devastating injuries resulted in Jensen fighting through a cardiac arrest and stroke. She had to be revived after losing her pulse for 10 minutes, according to her mom.
After being rushed to the Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Georgia, Jensen received a life-saving operation where surgeons were able to repair some of the damage caused to the arteries and insert a stent.
Still in a critical condition, Jensen is now in the neuro ICU, mom Darlene set up a GoFundMe for her daughter.
With her doctors diagnosing her Caitlin with a "traumatic brain injury", the GoFundMe states: "Caitlin is currently conscious and able to respond to verbal commands by blinking her eyes, as well as wiggling her the toes of her left foot.
"However, the rest of her body sits in a state of paralysis due to the injury.
"Caitlin has a long road to recovery, and as a college student who has a very simple health care plan, she will need significant financial resources to get her through this road to recovery. We ask that you please flood Caitlin with your prayers and positive energy and consider donating to this cause."
As of this writing, more than $22,000 has been raised of the $100,000 target.
Darlene has taken to Facebook to give daily updates on her daughter's condition, revealing on Saturday: "[Caitlin] gave her best effort to smile today, and it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
"She is progressing with her movements on the left side – wiggling and flexing. She can’t lift her arm yet, or turn her head. Her right side is unchanged – still no movement.
"Her face doesn’t move very much yet, but she can open her eyes widely to show surprise, and the left corner of her mouth tries to smile. Adorable."
The doting mom added: "Still working on the pneumonia. The antiplatelet therapy seems to be going OK. We don’t see any signs of internal bleeding and are praying that it stays that way."
Officials from the Georgia Southern University Department of Biology also paid tribute to their former student, writing on Facebook:
"We are devastated to hear about injuries last week to one of our recent alumna. Caitlin Jensen graduated last month with a degree in Chemistry and Biology. She was active in the Biology Department on both our campuses.
"Last week during chiropractic care, Caitlin suffered dissected arteries in her neck. This damage led to cardiac arrest, a stroke, as well as a loss of pulse for over 10 minutes. Caitlin is now in the ICU at Memorial Hospital in Savannah. She is conscious and able to respond to verbal commands by blinking her eyes and wiggling the toes of her left foot. The rest of her body is in a state of paralysis.
"Caitlin has a long road to recovery, and as a college student who has a modest health care plan, she will need significant financial resources. Please consider making a donation to her care."
Per TIME, chiropractic treatment and spinal manipulation is generally considered safe, with it offering pain relief to many.
Speaking to TIME about the risk of conditions such as a stroke from chiropractic treatment, neurologist and chiropractor Dr. Scott Haldeman said: "Neck pain can be a sign of a stroke in process."
"So people may go see a doctor or chiropractor about that pain and then associate the subsequent stroke with their visit," he added. Haldeman's own research into artery tears also reported just 23 such cases among more then 134 million chiropractic manipulations.
Dr. Eric Hurwitz of the University of Hawaii also stated that severe reactions from chiropractic treatments are "very rare," with most patients never experiencing any adverse event.
"But we can’t predict who will or won’t experience an adverse event," Haldeman says. "There’s some risk involved. But there’s also risk from surgery or from taking medications."
We wish Caitlin the very best on her road to recovery.

Viewers have been left "traumatized" by a chilling simulation that shows the tragic moment a woman lost her foot after it became trapped in a moving elevator door.
Back in 2017, a short-haired woman suffered a horrific accident inside an elevator at the Conch Building on Zhongshan West Road in Shanghai.
Surveillance footage, obtained by Daily Mail, captured the moment she was distracted by her phone, and stepped into the lift - without realizing it had already started moving.
As she entered, she tripped and fell forward, her right leg slipping between the closing doors. In a horrifying turn, the elevator suddenly ascended, trapping her limb and dragging it upwards.

A second woman, who had been walking behind her, avoided the same fate by hesitating at the door.
The malfunctioning lift continued to rise for three floors before stopping. The woman, still conscious, lay on the floor awaiting help - her lower leg completely severed below the knee.
The gruesome incident was recreated in a simulation by Zack D. Films, a content creator known for digital reconstructions of real-life tragedies.
"She tripped on the rising lift and fell forward. Her leg slipped between the closing doors. It continued to ascend, dragging her trapped leg with brutal force," Zack narrates in the clip shared on Instagram.
"Within moments, her leg was completely severed, leaving behind only a stump. Rescue teams arrived quickly, but the damage was catastrophic," he added.
According to the YouTuber, the elevator’s faulty operation, combined with the woman’s distraction, turned the situation deadly.
The graphic simulation has shaken social media users, with many admitting they were left traumatized after watching the clip. "I'm f***ing traumatized,"** one viewer commented.
"Traumatized in 34 seconds," another wrote.
"That’s why I’m afraid to use elevators," a third shared. "This made my heart sink into my rib cage," a fourth added.

The YouTuber shared another chilling simulation, which showed how a woman's hair was caught in a conveyor belt at a milk factory.
The horrific incident took place at an Aavin dairy plant in Tiruvallur, India, according to the New Indian Express.
The victim, 30-year-old K. Umarani, was a contract worker at Sasi Enterprises, and she was working on the production line when her dupatta (a long scarf or shawl) got trapped in a conveyor belt, which further led to her hair getting caught.
"Before she could react, she was pulled in, and her hair was caught as well. She was instantly decapitated. Other workers alerted plant authorities and police,” a police official said.
Following the accident, Milk and Dairy Development Minister T. Mano Thangaraj called it an “unfortunate accident caused due to negligence” and announced changes to factory protocols.
“According to the standard operating procedure (SOP) at Aavin plants, wearing a shawl is not allowed in the packing section. However, a few female staff members preferred to wear it, so they were permitted to do so. The SOP will be revised to make wearing an overcoat mandatory,” he added.
Thangaraj also said that the conveyor belt in the packing section moved at a slow pace and had no mechanical faults.
Police ended up arresting Varun Kumar, the supervisor of the Kakkalur dairy unit, on charges of causing death due to negligence. Additionally, Ajith Kumar, deputy general manager of the unit, was suspended.
Aavin also confirmed that departmental action had been initiated against officials from the company’s engineering department and two other staff members.

A catastrophic rollercoaster incident has resulted in one death and several injuries at Stockholm's renowned amusement park, Grona Lund.
As reported by The Sun, The Jetline rollercoaster, a popular attraction at the park, partially derailed during its course, leading to a tragic accident.
Amidst the chaos and shock, a representative from Grona Lund confirmed the casualty count, stating the crash had led to one fatality and several injuries.
Eyewitness accounts detailed the harrowing event, describing the disarray as authorities rushed to secure the area. It was reported that the accident was so severe it caused the ride's wheels to detach.
Cecilia, an onlooker, told Aftonbladet: "First we heard three, four loud bangs. People started screaming and then people started running. At first they thought it was a shooting. Then we saw how the wheels from the cart were on the ground. That was probably what sounded so loud. It's terrible, this kind of thing can't happen."
With the park currently being evacuated, an investigation is underway, according to a police spokesperson.
Grona Lund, which has been operational for 140 years, will remain closed until further notice.
Jenny Lagerstedt, a journalist who was at the park with her family, shared her account with SVT, stating that she heard a metallic noise and observed the track shaking during the incident. She shared her husband's witness of the coaster car plummeting to the ground with terrified patrons on board.
Annika Troselius, Head of Information at the park, confirmed that the injuries are severe, though the full extent of the damage is yet to be established. She emphasized that their primary focus now is on aiding the victims and providing support to their staff.
Troselius told Aftonbladet: "The reason for that is something that we must return to. Everyone is one hundred percent focused on helping the victims now."
The Jetline rollercoaster, a steel-tracked ride capable of reaching speeds up to 56 mph and a height of 98 feet, is a major draw for the park, with over a million visitors riding it each year, as per the park's website.
Our thoughts go out to everybody impacted by this tragedy.

A woman who was involved in an accident that led to her losing her eye has issued an urgent warning to others.
Daniella Abreu, a 24-year-old medical assistant from Stuart, Florida, was out for an evening walk with her 60-pound husky, Blu, on August 7, 2023.
That night, her usual leash was too frayed, prompting her to use an old retractable leash—a decision that would change her life forever.
As they walked through her neighborhood, Blu suddenly lunged after a rabbit. Abreu tried to control her dog by pulling back on the leash, but it snapped, recoiling violently and hitting her directly in the right eye.
"As he was running one way and I was pulling the opposite way, the friction of the leash just snapped back and repelled, hitting me right in my eye," Abreu told People.
"It happened so fast, but I knew it was bad immediately. The force of the leash was so traumatic."
Bleeding and partially blinded, Abreu described the chaotic moments that followed.
"There was so much blood," she recalled. "I thought I completely lost my eye, so my fight-or-flight mode kicked in and I was able to run home. I ran inside screaming."
Her parents rushed to her aid, with her father visibly terrified.
"Even though it may not have been a life-or-death situation at that moment, I obviously didn't know," she explained. "I was losing a lot of blood, and eventually, I just passed out."
Abreu was rushed to a trauma center in Fort Pierce, about an hour away, where doctors discovered she had suffered multiple severe injuries, including a fractured bone beneath her eye, a detached retina, and a torn eyelid.
X-rays confirmed significant trauma to the bones surrounding her eye, and she was in urgent need of surgery.
The severity of her injuries required Abreu to be transferred to Miami for emergency surgery. "I was preparing myself for the worst," she said.
After the operation, Abreu received the devastating news that she was permanently blind in her right eye.
Despite several more surgeries over the following year, her vision could not be restored, and doctors had to remove her damaged eye.
"I still don't believe it's true," she said. "I had to put my entire life on pause."
Once an active dancer and full-time medical assistant, she was bedridden, sleeping often to cope with the physical and emotional toll of her injuries.
She experienced migraines, anxiety, and panic attacks, and was diagnosed with PTSD. Eventually, she sought therapy to help her navigate her new reality.
"I had to basically relearn everything," she shared. "When you have both eyes, you're used to opening them at the same time. But my right eye was stitched closed, so I had to gradually learn how to only open my left eye, which caused more pain."
In June 2024, Abreu was fitted with a prosthetic eye, which must be replaced every three to five years.
While the prosthetic restored some sense of normalcy, she admitted she still struggles with insecurity. "I don't like the movement of my prosthetic," she said.
"The range of motion is very limited, and I still wear a lot of sunglasses everywhere I go because I'm so embarrassed by how it looks."
Despite her challenges, Abreu has found solace in sharing her journey on TikTok, where she connects with others who have suffered similar injuries.
With over 125,700 followers, her platform allows her to spread awareness about the dangers of retractable leashes and offer support to those dealing with life-changing injuries.
"I've had a lot of people reach out, and it made me realize there's a whole community of people who have one eye, not even due to just freak accidents, but various other reasons," she said.
"It also made me feel good to talk about it and spread awareness."
