Frequenters of the social media platform, YouTube may have noticed a worrying trend of late, wherein people exploit others in order to gain views and "subscribers".
With things such as "daily vlogs" gaining popularity, people have began to share unprecedented amounts of their lives with their fans, and this, as you can imagine, comes with its fair share of problems. One of the most popular YouTube families, DaddyOFive is the most recent example of going above and beyond what is acceptable to gain notoriety.
The YouTube family, who used to garner over 23 million views per month became embroiled in child abuse allegations after they posted a seven minute video which was quickly deleted after backlash started to grow. The video depicted the couple deliberately spilling ink on the carpet of their children's bedroom. They proceeded to blame the mess on their son, who began to cry and show distress before admitting that it was all an elaborate hoax.
Mike and Heather Martin actually lost custody of two of their five children following viewers' concerns. On the 1st May, a judge gave emergency custody of Cody and Emma to their biological mother, Rose Hall. And now, the couple has been charged with child neglect.
Mike and Heather Martin, who are based in Maryland have been charged with two counts of mistreating two of their children between November 2016 and April 2017. The charges were filed on the 27th July.
Following the allegations, the couple decided to remove every video from their YouTube channel, barring two. One of the videos was an apology wherein the couple explains that although they "just wanted [their] kids to be happy", they realise that they "went about it the wrong way". Heather continues:
"Before we knew it, we were caught-up in our family’s popularity which led to some poor decisions.
"Upon reflection, we realise there were mistakes made that caused our family some pain.’"We offer our most humble and sincere apology to those we negatively impacted and offended, particularly our wonderful children. Our children are safe."
The video which has since gathered over five million views can be watched below:
Since issuing the apology video the family have gone on to release over forty other videos - none of which feature any of their children.
The couple's lawyer, Stephen Tully has stated that there is a plea agreement which will be heard on the 11th of September. However, he refused to hand out any more information, noting that a number of factors could change before the initial hearing in September.
In cases of child neglect that maximum sentence is five years in prison and a fine of $5,000.

A family has spoken out after a video emerged on social media of a man dancing with his children's 23-year-old nanny.
According to Insider, the controversy was first sparked when a woman named Rachel uploaded a video to TikTok showing her husband Andrew dancing with their childcare, 23-year-old Lizzie Norton.
The pair can be seen re-enacting a scene from the movie Dirty Dancing, which involved Andrew lifting up Lizzie.
Take a look at the original video the sparked the controversy here:
The clip shows the pair laughing together and they repeatedly try and fail to recreate the iconic movie moment. At one point in the video, mom Rachel can also be heard saying to Andrew: "You just thumbed her boobs."
When Rachel uploaded the footage to social media, the hands-on clip quickly accrued a lot of attention from other users on the platform, garnering over 8.2 million views, 802,000 reactions, and a further 18,000 comments as of the time of writing.
However, many commenters clearly seemed to take umbrage with the relationship between Andrew and Lizzie - with many stating that they thought their behavior was inappropriate, or voicing their suspicions that the two were having an affair.

For example, one TikTok user wrote: "I think you should get a new husband and a new nanny."

Then this user added: "I showed this to my husband and he said [...] they're definitely sleeping together."

Another person then penned: "The nanny is so aggressive and handsy he's just going along with it?? IDK if the wife is naive and thinks she's just fun or if she's enjoying this."

Finally, this user said: "Only way someone encourages anyone to act like this with their husband is if they're desperately trying to prove to [themselves] that nothing is going on."
Other childminders also shared their thoughts on the footage.

For instance, one wrote: "I was a nanny for a long time and I never once even touched the dad??? They are way too comfortable with each other ma'am."

Another stated: "I was a nanny for 6 years for the same family and I NEVER EVER did 5% on what's happening in this video [...] so unprofessional."
As a result of this fallout, Insider reports that Rachel has since responded to the allegations of impropriety in a subsequent follow-up video.
Rachel stated: "On the rare occasion, she does see him. They're so happy to see each other because she's like our little sister."
She continued: "We love her to death. She's really, like, goofy and weird, and we can joke around and mess with her, and vice versa.
"When she dates and makes bad decisions on other things, we give her advice. We tell her we're disappointed in her. We tell her we're proud of her."
Rachel also took to the comments section to dismiss many of the comments questioning the relationship between Andrew and Lizzie.

"We're flattered by the interest guys. Most of you are out of your minds but we're flattered," she wrote.

Remember the days when pranking videos weren't literally everywhere? Back in the 90s, stuff like Jackass and the Tom Green Show was seen as groundbreaking for showcasing clever, inventive pranks on TV. These pioneers were trolling others before trolling even had a name. But nowadays, with YouTube totally dominating our culture, pranking videos are ubiquitous. since they're the best way for vloggers to achieve viral fame. Type "prank" into YouTube's search bar, and you could potentially spend the rest of your life trawling through the millions of hits, and stumble upon some seriously questionable content while you're at it.
We all recall the controversy provoked by YouTuber DaddyOFive (aka Mike Martin and his wife Heather Martin) who released a prank video in which they yelled at their kids after pouring invisible ink on their carpet. The duo were accused of child abuse and exploitation and the video has since been removed. However, now another YouTuber's channel has reportedly been suspended, after he filmed a video in which he appeared to feed his children laxatives.
Cordero James Brady, also known as "CJ So Cool", fed laxative-laced ice cream to minors in a video on his monetised channel, and the prank appeared to make the kids seriously nauseous and unwell. One of the children can even be heard moaning in pain: "my stomach hurts." The video was promptly deleted after being flagged to YouTube by Babe.net, and social services were notified shortly thereafter.
A police spokesman involved in the incident stated: "There was a case that was investigated in 2016 involving laxatives and this individual. It was a joint investigation with Clark County Child Protective Services. It was submitted to the DAs office and it was recommended as a criminal case."
Dr Kortney Peagram, who represents the anti-child abuse charity Bulldog Solution, stated: "Harming your child on purpose with laxatives is child abuse. That’s child endangerment. [He is] harming his children and bullying them to pull pranks on each other, it is really disturbing. He’s modelling inappropriate behavior and encouraging it by laughter… He’s teaching his children that it’s okay to harm each other for a good laugh."
YouTube has since released an official statement which says: "content that endangers minors is unacceptable to us and we have strict policies prohibiting child endangerment and harmful and dangerous content. We remove content that violates our policies as soon as we’re made aware of it."
Alarmingly, this isn't the first incident where Brady has been called out for his treatment of his children. His channel, which currently boasts around 5,600,000 subscribers, also includes a video where he reduced his son to tears by pretending to destroy his Playstation, and a video where he tricked his partner into thinking that her child had drowned. So listen up: prank videos can be fun as long as they're harmless. The second that it ventures into child endangerment; that's when it's no laughing matter.
A 23-year-old YouTuber is being "investigated" after she drew ire from fans and social media for allegedly beating her two-year-old daughter over a ruined make-up palette, the Metro reports.
In the video, Michelle Grace can be seen telling her 1.1k YouTube subscribers, "My two-year-old just got her a*s beat," as the sobbing toddler can be heard in the background.
You can watch the original clip in the video below:
In the clip, Grace explains her reaction, stating:
"Because no matter how many times I tell her not to mess with my makeup, she never f**king listens. I put it away so that she can’t find it. And what does she do? She finds it. At this point I need a freaking safe with a combination on it to keep her out of it. She has ruined two palettes of mine, and one of them is being discontinued. "

Grace continued:
"My hand hurts because I just beat the crap out of her. Not literally, but I taught her a lesson. I know a lot of parents won’t agree with me but I don’t spank my child, unless I have to. Usually, it’s just a pop and it barely hurts, she cries for like five seconds."

However, due to the hostile reaction to the revelation, it has since been revealed that Grace is under investigation - though details remain scarce. As she herself explained, the ongoing situation means that she can’t say much more, other than that it is "happening".
After receiving a backlash across social media, Grace penned a lengthy Twitter statement to her fans and the public. As she put it:
"What I did should have never been done. I acted out of emotions and had a lapse in judgement. That being said, I’m truly sorry if it all came off the wrong way. It was poor choice of words and I admit that.
"I should not have made it seem like materialistic things were more important than her because trust me, they’re not. I realise now where I went wrong. I love her more than everything and everyone. I always have."
"I’m a young mum and I’m far from perfect. But I am a good mum. My video and my clouded feelings didn’t show that at all and I truly am sorry. I’m still learning to go this whole parenting thing. It’s not easy. I don’t think it ever will be easy. I hope one day you all will be able to see the good in me."

"Yes I popped / spanked her. But not hard. It hurt her feelings but not her. When she doesn’t listen to what I tell her, I feel like a failure as a mum. Talking calmly and taking things away for short periods of time sometimes doesn’t work with her.
"I don’t expect anyone to ever be okay with what I did. I’m not even okay with it. It was awful and insensitive. But I hope that with the help and advice of others, I can learn from this, move past it to be a better person and mother for the future."

Grace appears to have since deleted her Twitter profile.
Last week, YouTuber Logan Paul made headlines after posting a series of tasteless and offensive videos about his trip to Japan - one of which concerned the Aokigahara suicide forest. Since then, people have been questioning the sort of content that gets posted to YouTube, and to what extent the video platform should intervene when it comes to questionable topics.
In an apology issued via Twitter, the company said, "We expect more of the creators who build their community on @YouTube, as we’re sure you do too," which prompted people to take a closer look at other YouTubers who had posted controversial material in the past.
As a result, Shane Dawson, a YouTuber who has been making vlogs for more than a decade, came under fire after old footage of him making inappropriate jokes were reposted by an account named "PopBlast".
The video, which was titled, "I think Shane Dawson is a pedophile. Here's my proof.", showed footage of Dawson making questionable comments about child pornography during a guest appearance on a podcast.
"I went to Google and I didn't want to see child porn. I just wanted to see, let me pretend I'm a pedophile for a second," he said. "So I typed in naked baby. First of all, I don't understand why anybody would be turned on by that. But, they were sexy. I'm kidding."
The comment was obviously intended as a joke - a terrible one, of course - but a joke nonetheless. As a result, PopBlast's account has now been banned by YouTube. But Dawson still felt a need to explain and take accountability for his actions.
In his own post on Wednesday, the 29-year-old YouTuber posted a vlog which began with the same clip of him making the obscene comment, before following it up with an outraged response that anyone would accuse him of pedophilia, plus an apology for his misguided actions.
[[youtubewidget||https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7B0z_2EZmQ&feature=youtu.be]]
"I wanted to play that clip in full—that moment especially in full—just for context because that seems to be missing nowadays. I can't believe I'm having this make this video," he stated at the beginning of the video.
"I'm going to start by saying I'm not a f***ing pedophile. I go on record saying I am not a f***ing pedophile. Got it? Great. There's my statement. It's disgusting that people are saying I'm a f***ing pedophile because of some s****y ass f***ing jokes from six years ago on a podcast."
Once that was out of the way, he apologized for swearing, then went on to admit that he used to deliberately say controversial things - and is now incredibly regretful because of it.
"I'm going to apologize first. I'm sorry that I used to make really s****y f***ing jokes. I'm sorry that I was so f***ing insecure and playing this character of this guy who's crazy and will say anything and tries to make people laugh by shocking them. That was my thing. That is what I did on YouTube," he confessed.
[[twitterwidget||https://twitter.com/shanedawson/status/951240763332898816]]
He also made it clear that he has changed so much in that time, and has actually been abused himself in the past, so he now makes a conscious effort to shed light on the matter.
"I think that's why it hurts the most is having my name put next to the word pedophile is actually the most triggering and the most heartbreaking thing I've literally ever seen," he said. "I've been called everything. I've been on YouTube for a long time.
"I'm so sorry if that triggered you or offended you or hurt your feelings. It triggers me listening to that."
While Dawson's comments were obviously in poor taste, it's good to see him taking some accountability on the matter. This incident has certainly been a lesson to the YouTuber, and indeed everyone else who uses the platform.
A YouTuber has sparked outrage after revealing he is in a romantic relationship with both a 22-year-old woman and her mother.

Nick Yardy, whose real name is Nicholas Hunter, left his followers stunned after he announced that he was dating fellow influencer Jade and her mother, Dani - and claimed that both women were pregnant.
As expected, the internet had plenty to say, with reactions ranging from curiosity to outright disgust. While some questioned the legitimacy of the claim, others condemned the situation entirely.
However, as is often the case with most viral internet stories, not everything is real. The 29-year-old admitted during an interview with Daily Mail that the pregnancy claim was nothing more than an elaborate stunt.
“There are no babies. It's just, like, a skit. It's not actually real,” he explained. “People that follow me, they're just looking for entertainment, and I don't think they really [believe it].”
But while the pregnancy was fake, the content creator insists that his relationship with both Jade and Dani is very much real.
“They are actually mother and daughter, and our involvement with each other is real,” he confirmed. “It’s just that they’re not actually pregnant. At least not yet.”
Regardless of whether people believed the pregnancy claim, the unconventional relationship itself has been widely condemned.
"What the hell is wrong with people?" one person questioned, while another slammed: “This is just flat out disgusting omfg bring back shame."
A third commented: “So either it's true and they are disgusting individuals. Or it's a fake story for OF, and they are still disgusting individuals," and a fourth added: “Nothing to brag about, the whole thing is disgusting.”
Meanwhile, others viewed the situation as a clear-cut case of internet clout-chasing. One user summed it up: “Ah, the tangled web of internet clout-chasing, don’t you see? A man claims he pulled off the biological equivalent of a reality TV finale, and yet - like all things in the age of viral deception - the timeline doesn’t quite add up.
“One month prior, no baby bumps. Now, an explosive double pregnancy? Sounds like someone’s fishing for engagement, you know?" they continued. “The real play here is obvious: shock value.
"Nothing lures people into the digital abyss of curiosity quite like an absurd story wrapped in scandal. And, of course, if there’s an OF link involved, the motivations become clearer than a glass-bottom boat. Subscription bait, plain and simple," they concluded.
