Amber Heard has just filed to appeal the verdict in her defamation trial against Johnny Depp

Amber Heard has officially filed to appeal the verdict in her defamation case against Johnny Depp - a number of weeks after she was ordered to pay her ex-husband more than $10 million in damages.

As reported by TMZ, the 36-year-old actress' attorneys filed the appeal documents on Thursday in Fairfax County, Virginia, in response to the $10.35 million judgment seven jurors ordered her to pay her ex-husband last month.

The jury also decided that Depp should pay Heard $2 million, so essentially Heard actually owes her ex-husband $8.35 million in damages - but she had made her intentions of appealing clear the day the verdict arrived.

Heard had previously filed a motion requesting a new trial on the grounds that one of the jurors supposedly turned up to court in place of his father who the jury summons was addressed to. But the judge rejected the motion.

However, it's likely that Depp and his team will remain unconcerned about her fresh new efforts, with the actor's reps telling TMZ: "The jury listened to the extensive evidence presented during the six-week trial and came to a clear and unanimous verdict that the defendant herself defamed Mr. Depp in multiple instances. We remain confident in our case and that this verdict will stand."

The jurors - made up of five men and two women - had been asked to determine whether Heard and Depp defamed one another in statements they'd made about their relationship.

The lawsuit was based on a 2018 op-ed the actress wrote for The Washington Post. Depp's legal counsel had insisted that the Aquaman star was lying when she claimed to be a victim of physical and sexual violence.

Throughout the trial, which started in April, attorneys for Depp argued that Heard's op-ed implied he was physically abusive towards his former wife - despite the fact that he was not named in it. His legal team also alleged that Heard's accusations cost him his reputation and his illustrious Hollywood career.

Depp originally sought $50 million in damages. Heard, on the other hand, sought an eye-watering $100 million.
