Two of the stars from the iconic film The Breakfast Club have reunited and understandably, the interaction has set the internet alight.

Posting to Instagram, Molly Ringwald - best known for her portrayal of Claire Standish in the 1980s film - shared a snapshot with her "psychic sister" Ally Sheedy, who played Allison Reynolds.

The two actresses were hugging for the picture while dining at New York City's Cafe Luxembourg.

Since the post was shared on Sunday, it has already amassed over 39,800 likes and thousands of comments from excited fans who praised the reunion as an "early Christmas present."

"Just fainted," wrote one user.

"My Gen X heart just skipped a beat! This is just so good to see!" Added another.

"Teenage me, who, spent too many hours in Breakfast Club during high school and ODs on 80s nostalgia, 💖 this picture," said a third fan.

And this user even described the reunion as a "gift", writing: "I can't take this holiday gift without screaming."

Others were too busy enquiring about a potential sequel, with one requesting: "We need a Breakfast club sequel!!!"

"The closest thing to a Breakfast Club sequel," added another.

Released in 1985, it follows the story of a group of teenagers from different high school cliques who spend a Saturday in detention with their assistant principal.

When speaking of a sequel, it was reported that The Breakfast Club 2 never came to be because of the unfortunate passing of the director John Hughes in 2009.

However, as per the Independent, Ringwald revealed that the details of the project would eventually come to light, explaining: "Somebody told me that there is the script for a sequel to The Breakfast Club. One day, all that stuff will come out."

Hall, who played Brian Johnson in the coming-of-age film, also told the outlet: "At that time, he [Hughs] did mention the potential of doing a sequel to The Breakfast Club.

"It would have been all of us in our middle-age. His idea was to pick up with them in their twenties or thirties. That [idea] was on his mind, but that was the last conversation I had with him. I wish I could have spent more time with him. To let him know how much I loved him and how much he meant to me.

"Because, you know, he gave me my start, and so much more."
