Cameron Diaz has opened up about her desire to "normalize" couples not sleeping in the same bed, even if they are married.

Sleeping apart has typically been seen as a little bit taboo for a married couple, potentially hinting at problems in their relationship.

However, there can be a multitude of reasons why someone may choose to sleep in a different room from their partner, from conflicting schedules to simply not being able to get enough rest if your other half happens to snore.

Sleeping separately can actually have some benefits for a relationship - especially if it means both partners are well-rested and not snappy from being kept awake all night - and Cameron, 51, is all for the concept.

The actress, who has been married to Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden since 2015, admitted that she would even go as far as having separate houses from a spouse.

She revealed on the Lipstick on the Rim podcast during a discussion on healthy lifestyles: "We should normalize separate bedrooms.

"To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I'm fine.

"And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations."

The host, Molly Sims, admitted that people may think that stance was "controversial", but Cameron doubled down that she'd "already said it" and couldn't take it back.

And while she's all for going the extra mile to get a good night's sleep. Cameron did clarify that she and Benji, 44, don't actually sleep in different rooms.

She explained: "By the way, I don't feel that way now because my husband is so wonderful. I said that before I got married."

The mom-of-one was first introduced to Benji by Nicole Richie, who is married to his twin brother and bandmate, Joel Madden, and the couple got married just 10 months after meeting.

She admitted that while she found him "so hot" from the start, her feelings continued to grow once she got to know him as a person.

Cameron told Anna Faris on her Unqualified podcast in 2021: "When I saw who he was, that's what made me really be like, 'Oh you, you're special, you're the guy, you're the hidden gem in my life.'"

The couple have gone on to welcome their daughter Raddix, three, and Cameron previousky described motherhood as being the "best, best, best part" of her life.

She told Gucci Westman in 2020: "I'm so grateful and so happy and it's the best thing ever and I'm so lucky to do it with Benj and we're having the best time. I'm thrilled. I can't believe it."

The couple also celebrated eight years of marriage in January, when Benji shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing: "Eight years married, side by side, and now a little one for us to guide let's do 80 more and then forever happy anniversary."
