Nowadays it seems like everyone on the planet has a tattoo. In fact, I'm beginning to feel like me and the non-inked people are in the minority now. If I sound like I'm a bit bitter then don't forget that the only reason I haven't gotten one myself is that I'm too much of a wimp. to bother. Even celebrities are jumping on the bandwagon now, and more and more of them are being open about their own body art.
The only issue is that tattoos are usually pretty personal, and people have a number of reasons for getting them. Working out what they mean is a pretty exasperating job, and can leave you scratching your head. So that's why we've taken the liberty of deciphering what some of these celebrity tats actually mean, all so they're not longer as obtuse. No need to thank us. Scroll down to check them out below.
1. Miley CyrusIt isn't hard to understand the meaning behind Miley Cyrus' foot tattoo isn't hard to decipher; it's a tribute to her dad, the country musician Billy Ray Cyrus. Awww!
2. Selena GomezSelena Gomez has a stylish tattoo on her back, which is easily concealed by her outfits most of the time. It's an arabic phrase which roughly translates as: "love yourself first."
3. Emma StoneTo celebrate the fact that her mother's cancer was in remission, Emma Stone and her mom each got tattoos that pay tribute to their favourite Beatles song "Blackbird." Stone actually wrote a letter to Paul McCartney himself, asking for a drawing of birds' feet to tattoo, and he responded by sending her the drawing which ended up on her and her mother's wrist.
4. Lady GagaLady Gaga's tattoo is a quote from Letters to a Young Poet written by German poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Translated it reads: "In the deepest hour of the night; Confess to yourself that you would die if you were forbidden to write; And look deep into your heart where it spreads its roots, the answer; and ask yourself, must I write?"
5. Kylie JennerKylie Jenner's hip tattoo comes courtesy of celebrity artist Bang Bang. It looks like a random string of vowels, but is actually meant to represent the phonetic spelling of the word 'sanity.'
6. Brooklyn BeckhamBrooklyn Beckham is proud to boast this tattoo on his arm. The numbers apparently represent the birthdays of each of his three siblings: Romeo, September 1, 2002; Cruz, February 20, 2005 and Harper, July 10, 2011.
7. Sophie TurnerGame of Thrones star Sophie Turner has the letter "G" tattooed on her pinky finger, apparently as a tribute her late grandfather.
8. Amanda SeyfriedWeirdest of all, Mean Girls actress Amanda Seyfried has the word "minge" written on her foot. Why? Well even she doesn't seem to know. In a recent interview, Seyfried stated: "It’s a term of endearment and in England it means vagina but in the U.S., where I spend most of my time, it doesn’t mean anything. We commemorated our friendship with ‘minge’ tattoos."
The most embarrassing tattoo to have is a tattoo of an ex. So Justin Bieber must be feeling pretty sheepish right now. Even though he's just gotten engaged to Hailey Baldwin, he apparently still has a tattoo of Selena Gomez on his finger.
