Princess Diana's infamous interview with Martin Bashir is back in the spotlight.

Twenty-six years after the bombshell documentary aired, an investigation is being carried out amid claims the royal was tricked into taking part.

It's reported Diana was manipulated into giving the interview and fed falsehoods to turn her against Prince Charles – including allegations that he was having an affair with her children's nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke.

Per the Daily Mail, the princess was reportedly even given a fake receipt for an abortion after being told that Legge-Bourke had had fallen pregnant during the affair.

With that in mind, it's little surprise that a heartbroken Diana didn't hesitate to expose everything.  Here, we take a look back at the bombshells dropped during the princess' Panorama interview that shook the world.

Take a look at the full interview with Bashir in the video below:

1. Diana knew about Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles

Perhaps most shocking of all was the revelation that Diana was aware of Prince Charles' infidelity.

During the interview, Diana asserted that their marriage was made up of three people and described the relationship as "crowded".

She stated that she had been informed of the affair by people close to her and that the situation was only complicated further when the media learned that the couple was sleeping separately, which put a further strain on her marriage.

2. Diana did not make the decision to separate

Towards the latter part of the interview, Diana went on to allege that it was Prince Charles, and not her, who ultimately made the decision to separate.

Diana stated that this provoked: "Deep, deep, profound sadness. Because we had struggled to keep it going. But, obviously, we'd both run out of steam."

She added: "It could have been a relief for us both that we'd finally made our minds up. But my husband asked for the separation and I supported it."

3. Diana self-harmed

The subject then turned to the issue of Diana's self-harming, which was also comparatively a far more shocking topic in the mid-nineties than today.

Diana stated that she started self-harming because she felt that no-one was listening to her and that her self-harming was exacerbated by accusations that her behavior was somehow "crying wolf" or "attention-seeking".

She added: "I did inflict upon myself. I didn't like myself, I was ashamed because I couldn't cope with the pressures.

"I just hurt my arms and my legs, and I work in environments now where I see women doing similar things and I'm able to understand completely where they're coming from."

4. Diana suffered from post-natal depression

Diana then opened up about the post-natal depression she had experienced after giving birth to Prince William in 1982 – a subject many women were hesitant to discuss openly at that time.

The princess stated: "I was unwell with post-natal depression, which no one ever discusses, post-natal depression, you have to read about it afterward, and that in itself was a bit of a difficult time.

"You'd wake up in the morning feeling you didn't want to get out of bed, you felt misunderstood, and just very, very low in yourself."

Diana also opined that she was the first member of the Royal household to have experienced depression, or at least to have discussed and displayed it openly.

5. Diana also suffered from bulimia

Diana went on to speak about her struggles with an eating disorder, claiming that she had bulimia for two or three years. She stated: "I had bulimia for a number of years. And that's like a secret disease.

"You inflict it upon yourself because your self-esteem is at a low ebb, and you don't think you're worthy or valuable. You fill your stomach up four or five times a day – some do it more – and it gives you a feeling of comfort.

"It's like having a pair of arms around you, but it's temporarily, temporary. Then you're disgusted at the bloatedness of your stomach, and then you bring it all up again."

6. Diana's mental health was used against her

During the interview, Diana revealed that after she was diagnosed with depression, she was labelled "unstable" with her marriage.

She explained: "Well, it gave everybody a wonderful new label – Diana's unstable and Diana's mentally unbalanced.

"And unfortunately that seems to have stuck on and off over the years. I think people used it [within my marriage] and it stuck, yes."

7. Prince Charles' jealous side

Diana added that Prince Charles sometimes took it personally when she was favored by the press and the public – particularly when it came to their philanthropic work together, which they both considered a team effort.

The princess stated: "If you're a man, like my husband a proud man, you mind about that if you hear it every day for four weeks.

"And you feel low about it, instead of feeling happy and sharing it."

8. Diana's tears

Diana claimed that she wasn't allowed to make mistakes, and when she inevitably did, she would be reduced to tears.

"Well anything good I ever did nobody ever said a thing, never said, 'well done', or 'was it okay?' But if I tripped up, which invariably I did, because I was new at the game, a ton of bricks came down on me.

"Obviously there were lots of tears, and one could dive into the bulimia, into escape."

9. Diana was isolated

Diana also made comments, echoed by Meghan Markle in 2021, that entering into the Royal Family left her very isolated and lonely, and that she did not receive a lot of support from Buckingham Palace.

The royal stated that she was discouraged from ever seeming sorry for herself and that learning the rigors of the royal protocols was a very much "sink or swim" experience.
