Elliot Page has revealed that he had a secret two-year relationship with a closeted actress.
Page has been very candid about his relationships, sexuality, and gender identity over the past several years, with the actor originally coming out as gay in 2014 and later in 2020 revealing he is a trans man.
In December 2020, the Juno star took to Instagram to share a lengthy heartfelt post, in which he shared with his followers that his pronouns are he/they.
The actor explained this week that he felt it was "important" for him to share his story and live his truth after living over three decades in the wrong body.
Last year, the Canadian-born actor's memoir Pageboy was released, shedding light on further details of his life - including romances he had previously kept under wraps.
The 37-year-old revealed in the book that he met an actress (who he referred to as "Ryan") while filming a movie. According to Page, he fell “desperately in love” with said actress.
“My partner was more closeted than me for a change,” he wrote, before going on to say that even his closest friends weren't aware of the romance.
He recalled how they first met in a Los Angeles coffee shop when he was 26.
“She was radiant – her dress, her smile, how she pushed her hair from her face … We discussed books, activism, our collective consciousness, and the deep intelligence of nature,” he wrote.
Despite his deep feelings for Ryan, the Umbrella Academy star admits that they were very private throughout their relationship.
“Her parents did not know,” Page revealed. “I was the friend that came for Christmas … We never touched outside, we barely went to dinner. She was in my phone under the name ‘Ryan.'”
Despite the clandestine nature of their relationship, Page shared that they managed to have “a lot of fun,” and “discreet but adventurous sex. On rocks, just below the Pacific Coast Highway, hidden in boulders in Joshua Tree National Park, on an airplane.”
The couple also went on a few getaways to Nova Scotia and stayed in a friend’s cabin outside of Pugwash.
Page recounted a time they were waiting for a connecting flight in an Air Canada lounge. During the wait, Ryan took a book Page was reading and “began to write in the back sleeve, an outpouring of love, one of the most beautiful letters I have ever received.”
Admittedly, though, the romance “was not a sustainable relationship … the lying the anxiety, the disgust,” Page stated.
Ryan simply couldn’t “handle the shame” of being regarded as “queer” and ended things with him, which "shattered" him.
