Prepare to feel old, because Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's daughter Apple celebrated her 16th birthday yesterday.

Taking to Instagram, the 47-year-old actress posted a touching message to honor Apple's sweet sixteenth, as well as sharing several snaps of her rarely seen daughter with her 7.1 million followers. Paltrow wrote in the caption:

"I can’t believe I’m actually writing these words but... happy sweet sixteen my darling girl.

"You are the light of my heart, you are pure joy. You are wickedly intelligent and you have the best, most dry, most brilliant sense of humor. I have the best time being your mom.

"I love our nightly evening chats when I really get to hear what’s on your mind. You work hard to get whatever it is you want to achieve, and you have grit and responsibility in spades. I am so damn lucky to be your mother, you beautiful, kind young woman. Thank you for choosing me. I adore you to the moon and back a zillion times.

"I’m sorry you are having this particular birthday during these circumstances, but as always with you, you find the best in everything."

The heartwarming post amassed over 430,000 likes in under 12 hours, and along with comments from birthday well-wishers, many of Paltrow's followers couldn't get over how similar the two looked:

In a 2012 interview with Hello! Canada Magazine, Paltrow was asked about her daughter's quirky name, and revealed whose idea it was to name her Apple. She said:

"I know. People did talk about Apple a lot! My [ex-husband, Chris Martin] named her.

"I loved it straightaway. I thought it was so unique and sounded cool. She is nearly eight now and it fits her so perfectly. I can’t imagine her being called anything else."

The Iron Man star was then asked if Apple had ever questioned her parent on her unique name, to which Paltrow responded: "Yeah, and I say, 'Ask you father!'"

But in a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Paltrow added that Apple "loves" her name. The Shallow Hal star also opened up about her relationship with ex-husband Chris Martin.

"We actually have a really strong friendship and we laugh and we have fun," she told Stern. "But there are times when it's really difficult and things happen and you're like, 'I'm sure he doesn't want to hang out with me and I don't want to hang out with him.' But for the sake of the kids you do it. But you also don't do it all tense."

And Martin, 43, revealed in an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in January that Apple had landed her first job working in a clothing store.

He said: "My daughter works in a clothing store. It's her first job, and she's about to be 16, and I'm so proud of her. She's making her way in the world."

Martin then recalled embarrassing his daughter when he turned up to the store to surprise her.

"I just went to see. And I thought, 'I better buy something'. So I took a T-shirt from the rack and I lined up in the queue," he said

But when the teenager spotted her dad in line for the checkout, she got mad and mouthed: "Dad, get out."

"I felt terrible, so I moved to the other line, just holding my T-shirt, and really scared of my daughter," he joked. Martin also said that after paying for the shirt, he didn't know what to do with the fudge he had bought for Apple - who "loves candy".

"So I said to the lady, 'Can you just give this to my daughter?'"

Well, it turns out Apple must really love Candy, as she eventually had a change of heart, and as Martin was leaving, she shouted out, "I love you, Dad!"
