Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up about her reasons for refusing to engage in a sex scene with Ethan Hawke.

Sex scenes can be a divisive topic among actors, with some stars happy to go the whole way while others refuse to do them at all.

The rise of intimacy coordinators in recent years has also marked an important change in how the scenes are shot, to ensure everyone is comfortable with filming vulnerable intimate sequences.

Gwyneth revealed that there was one scene she outright refused to do as she and Ethan sat down together for a new interview with Vanity Fair.

The pair worked together on the 1998 adaptation of the novel Great Expectations and recalled the difficult decisions they had to make early in their careers.

Ethan recalled how filmmakers pitched a proposed sex scene between their characters - Finn Bell and Estella - with director Alfonso Cuaron saying to Gwyneth: "The camera is going to go down your belly, and then it's going to go up your breasts, and then it's going to go in your face as you reach ecstasy. And then when you reach ecstasy, the light will explode like to the sun!"

Gwyneth remembered herself thinking: "Oh, my God, my father’s going to have a heart attack."

Ethan says Gwyneth shut down the idea point blank, telling the director: "Alfonso, I'm never going to do that."

The actress opened up about her reasoning for turning down the intimate scene, explaining: "I was really self-conscious about my dad and grandfather seeing this kind of stuff. Like, it really bothered me. Now, I wouldn't care."

Ethan praised his co-star for how she handled the difficult conversation, stating that she was firm without being problematic, and understood that the images could be interpreted and reused differently.

Gwyneth added: "Maybe I was too prudish in the moment," to which he responded: "I don't think you were."

The actress admitted: "I was definitely worried about it."

Kylie Jenner is laying down the law when it comes to Timothée Chalamet’s on-screen sex life.

The beauty mogul and reality TV star is reportedly furious after actress Gwyneth Paltrow opened up about her intimate scenes with Chalamet in their upcoming movie Marty Supreme - a sports drama centered on a ping-pong prodigy and his affair with a rival’s wife. The interview appears to have sparked serious tension behind closed doors.

According to a source close to the Dune actor, Kylie is “mad” that Paltrow discussed the sex scenes in public and now wants Chalamet to stop filming them altogether.

Gwyneth’s comments caused a major stir

In a revealing interview with Vanity Fair, Paltrow, 52, didn’t hold back when talking about the racy film and working alongside the 28-year-old Oscar nominee.

“There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I didn’t even know existed,” the Shakespeare in Love star said. “Back in my day, you just got naked, got in the bed, and the camera rolled!”

She confirmed the two filmed multiple sex scenes and even suggested that the intimacy coordinator “step back” while they were working.

But those candid revelations haven’t gone down well with Jenner, who’s been dating Chalamet for two years. The insider revealed per The U.S. Sun, “Timothee has no problem being intimate in movies, but Kylie doesn’t like it. She doesn’t appreciate all the details and doesn’t want him to film any more sex scenes moving forward.”

Tensions rising in the Hollywood power couple's relationship

Things may be getting serious between Jenner and Chalamet, with The U.S. Sun previously reporting that he’s already picked out an engagement ring. The couple have also been seen scoping out luxury European properties as they look to set down roots together.

However, their relationship isn’t without controversy. Some of Chalamet’s inner circle have voiced concerns, with two sources saying it would be “a terrible mistake” for the couple to get married. One family member added, “It’s a mystery. Many of us don’t understand how they connect and click.”

The source added that Jenner’s stance on Chalamet’s film career is creating the biggest conflict between them since they began dating. “It has been the main source of tension between them lately, and it’s something that has been deeply bothering them.”

“He wants to explore everything as an actor and artist,” they said, suggesting Chalamet could end up limiting his career if he agrees to her demands.

Meanwhile, Timothée’s sister, Pauline, has taken subtle jabs at billionaires on social media, which some believe may be directed at Jenner.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s former relationship with Ben Affleck is back in the spotlight, as a new biography shares previously unknown, and highly personal, details about the couple’s time together in the late 1990s.

In Gwyneth: The Biography, author Amy Odell recounts an anecdote originally shared by the late celebrity makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin. According to the book, Paltrow privately spoke to Aucoin about an intimate moment with Affleck, revealing a side of her personality that contrasted with her polished public image.

While the book references a specific sexual act that Paltrow allegedly said she enjoyed during her relationship with Affleck. Odell writes that the moment reflected "the ribald side of her that her friends knew well but that the public didn’t see."

“She told Kevyn Aucoin in his London hotel room one day after lunch that she loved when Affleck ‘tea-b****d’ her,” Odell said.

Representatives for both Paltrow and Affleck have not commented on the claim.

Paltrow and Affleck began dating in 1997 after co-starring in the film Shakespeare in Love, and their relationship continued until 2000. Though they were often regarded as one of Hollywood’s most high-profile couples at the time, Odell suggests that their breakup was linked to underlying personal challenges.

“Their physical chemistry couldn’t overcome his self-destructive impulses, which may have even included cheating on her,” the biography alleges. The author also claims that Affleck was, during that period, “struggling with alcoholism and a gambling problem.”

According to Odell, Paltrow’s close friends reportedly had concerns about the relationship, with some feeling that Affleck did not consistently show her the same level of affection she gave him.

“He at times seemed more interested in playing video games with the guys at his house than being with Gwyneth,” the book claims, per Marie Claire.

Since their split, both actors have moved on. Paltrow later married Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, with whom she shares two children. After their separation, she married television producer Brad Falchuk in 2018.

Affleck, meanwhile, was previously married to actress Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018. He later rekindled a relationship with pop star Jennifer Lopez, marrying her in 2022. The couple reportedly separated in 2025.

Over the years, Paltrow has become known for her wellness and lifestyle brand Goop, which often garners headlines for its unconventional product offerings and open discussions about sexuality.

Among the brand’s most notable products was the now-discontinued $75 candle labeled “This Smells Like My Vagina,” per The Guardian. It was later followed by similarly themed candles titled “This Smells Like My Orgasm” and “This Smells Like My Prenup.”

Back in October, Gwyneth Paltrow spoke to the New York Times on the record about her experience with disgraced film mogul, Harvey Weinstein, and how her then-boyfriend, Brad Pitt, intervened to keep Weinstein from sexually harassing her again.

The actress explained that before filming commenced on the 1996 adaption of Emma, she was summoned to Weinstein's suite at the Peninsula Beverly Hills under the guise of a work meeting.

While the two talked shop to begin with, the episode culminated in Weinstein laying his hands on Paltrow, who was just 22-years-old at the time, suggesting that they engage in his pre-mating ritual: massages. "I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified"," she said. And whilst Paltrow spurned Weinstein's advances, she was understandably shaken by the confrontation, alleging "I thought he was going to fire me".

Now, in a new interview with Howard Stern, the Oscar-winning actress spoke candidly about what Weinstein did, and how Pitt reacted.

"We had one instance in a hotel room where [Weinstein] made a pass at me," she recalled. "And then I really kind of stood up to him. I told my boyfriend at the time, Brad Pitt."

Paltrow explained that she did not anticipate what eventually unfolded in that hotel room. "[I] definitely did not [have any vibe he was like this]. It was out of the blue. I was blindsided. He was fully clothed [when he said ‘let’s go take a massage’]...no bathrobe. I was shocked"
"So what happened was I told him [Brad] right away, and I was very shaken by the whole thing. And I had two movies, I signed up to do two movies with him. I was afraid [the films would be cancelled]. And Brad Pitt, we were at the opening of Hamlet on Broadway…and Harvey was there, and Brad Pitt, it was like the equivalent of throwing him against the wall, you know, energetically."

"[Brad] came back and told me exactly what he said [to Harvey]," Paltrow continued. "He said, ‘If you ever make her feel uncomfortable again, I’ll kill you,’ or something like that."

"It was so fantastic because what he did was he leveraged his fame and power to protect me at a time when I didn’t have fame or power yet."

Paltrow also discussed how nervous she was about going public with her story. "It was a really big decision," she asserted. "Looking back at it now, it’s much different."

"The landscape has completely changed so now it seems like a no brainer, but at the time, the floodgates hadn’t opened and not only did this story break, but it changed the culture completely. So I had been talking to Jodi and Megan all summer before the piece came out and I hadn’t decided whether I would go on the record or not. I didn’t tell anyone all summer that I was talking to Jodi and Megan. I didn’t tell anyone."
