Jennifer Aniston filmed a sex scene for Horrible Bosses 2 that was so controversial that producers pulled it from the movie entirely before it reached cinemas.
Her character, Dr Julia Harris, has sex with Charlie Day's character Dale while he is unconscious in a hospital bed. He is in a coma. She climbs on top of him and, as Aniston later put it on Conan, goes 'front ways, this way, that way, all by myself'.
The scene was shot, edited, and then scrapped. Even for a film built around terrible people doing terrible things, it crossed a line.
She spoke about the scene on Conan O'Brien's show in 2014 while promoting the film. She was visibly uncomfortable talking about it, laughing nervously and stumbling over her words.
She explained that intimate scenes are normally awkward for both actors, but at least you have someone to share the discomfort with. This was different.
"Charlie Day's character is in a coma, and I exploit him whilst he was in a coma," she said. "So it was a sex scene that was sort of... it was... they removed it."
She described the actual filming as 'terrifying' because Day had to just lie there motionless while she performed the scene on top of him.
"Usually you have someone there to support, but he's just laying there in a coma. And I'm like front ways, this way, that way, all by myself."
When O'Brien joked that nobody would dare cut an intimate scene involving Jennifer Aniston, she shook her head.
"Oh, it's possible."
The Horrible Bosses films are dark comedies about awful people. That is the entire point. Aniston's character sexually harasses Day's character throughout both films. She is written to be predatory, inappropriate, and completely without shame.
But there is a difference between a character who makes inappropriate comments and a character who sexually assaults an unconscious person on screen. Producers decided the coma scene landed on the wrong side of that line.
The actual sex was removed. The film still references it, though. Dale wakes up from his coma and discovers what Julia did to him while he was unconscious. The audience is told about it. They just don't have to watch it.
Aniston said she expected the footage to end up on the DVD extras. Whether it ever did is unclear. The clip has never surfaced publicly in full.
Horrible Bosses came out in 2011. The sequel in 2014. Both were released before the MeToo movement, before the wider public conversation about consent in entertainment shifted, and before audiences started looking more critically at scenes that played sexual assault for laughs.
In 2014, Aniston and O'Brien discussed the scene with awkward humour. She laughed about it. He joked about it. The audience laughed too.
Watched back now, the interview hits differently. She is describing a scene where her character rapes an unconscious man. The word rape was never used on the show. But that is what the scene depicted.
The fact that producers cut it before release suggests they knew at the time it was a problem. The fact that the film still references it, played as a punchline, suggests they didn't think it was that much of a problem.
Dr Julia Harris was a departure for Aniston. She had spent most of her post-Friends career in romantic comedies and lighter fare. Playing a sexually aggressive dentist who terrorises her employee was supposed to show audiences a different side of her.
It worked. The role became one of her most talked-about performances. She returned for the sequel and leaned even further into the character's worst impulses.
The rest of her career has covered a lot of ground since. She won a Screen Actors Guild Award for The Morning Show in 2020. She starred in Murder Mystery and its sequel on Netflix. She remains one of the most bankable actresses in Hollywood.
The Horrible Bosses coma scene is a footnote. But it is the kind of footnote that says a lot about what used to be considered acceptable in mainstream comedy and how quickly that window has moved.

An adult film star ended up needing 'emergency surgery' after filming a particularly spicy scene with a co-star.
Australian porn actress Angela White was filming with Keiran Lee, who went viral a few years ago after insinuating that White had "almost died" after their filmed encounter.
White had worked in the Australian adult film industry since 2003, and had even used her experiences there to help further her gender studies college degree, earning a first class honors for her studies of women's experiences in the Australian porn industry.
But her former co-star once told a podcast that, after a filming scene together, he'd "nearly put [White] in hospital."
Keiran Lee appeared on the podcast Pillow Talk back in 2023 and recounted the incident to its hosts.
Lee said that, on their first scene together, he and White had "[been] going at it for over an hour," before they finished filming and she left.
It was only after that he heard that Lee, having flown back to Australia, had been complaining of severe stomach cramps and had actually had to go to the emergency room as a result.
"She said her stomach was hurting," Lee recounted. "So she had to go see a doctor."
And it's a good thing that she did, with Lee revealing that White was actually, in fact, suffering a severe medical emergency that could have been fatal if left unchecked.
"Apparently her appendix burst in the scene," Lee revealed. "Which could have killed her. I could have killed Angela White in our first scene."
But we don't have to just take Lee's word for this - as Angela White has also weighed in, confirming this incident did occur, but not as dramatically as Lee made it out to be.
"[My appendix] actually did not burst," White told Only Stans podcast host Glenny Balls, "but it is true I had appendicitis and did have to have emergency surgery to have it removed."
White continued: "They had to make an incision above my pubic bone and at my hip. The scarring was minimal and the recovery was pretty fast. I did a porn expo four days after surgery."
All's well that ends well. And after this dramatic first meeting, both Lee and White have said that they've remained friends and kept in touch.

Jake Gyllenhaal has described filming sex scenes with Jennifer Aniston as no less than "torture".
When filming hot and heavy scenes for their 2002 movie The Good Girl, the pair were embroiled in a series of sex scenes throughout the film.
But, as Gyllenhaal notes, filming one of those is no easy feat - especially when you've got a huge crush on your co-star.
The pair - who played two lovers who embark on an extramarital affair - had to keep it professional on set, but it seems as though Gyllenhaal's feelings weren't reciprocated by Aniston.
Speaking to Howard Stern about filming the scenes, the actor said: "[Filming the sex scenes] was torture, yes it was."
"But it was also not torture. I mean, come on, it was like a mix of both."
Howard asked whether he warned his co-star in advance that a "protrusion" could occur, with Jake laughing before explaining: "Weirdly, love scenes are awkward, because there are maybe 30, 50 people watching it? That doesn't turn me on." he added.
He also described the process of shooting the scenes as "oddly mechanical".
"It's a dance, you're choreographing for a camera," he explained. "You can get in it, but it’s like a fight scene, you have to choreograph those scenes."
Gyllenhaal revealed that the scenes were filmed using something he referred to as "the pillow technique".
For those unacquainted with the movie magic, it basically acts as a buffer between two actors to create the illusion of having sex, without too much physical intimacy.
"The pillow technique was used," he said. "That was just pre-emptive and used generally always when actually in a horizontal place in that movie.
"I think that was actually a Jennifer suggestion,” he added. “She was very kind to suggest it before we began. She was like, 'I'm putting a pillow here.'"
In a 2016 interview, Gyllenhaal admitted to having innocent feelings for Aniston.
Speaking to People, he admitted: "I will say, I had a crush on her for years. And working with her was not easy… I was, um, yeah. That's all I'm going to say. It was lovely. It wasn't hard, that's what I would say."

She made the revelation on the Holly Randall Unfiltered podcast, discussing intricate layers of the adult film industry.
The 56-year-old made the decision to stop shooting with men just after getting married to her husband - who isn't in the industry - but says that wasn't what led to her making that choice.
She said: "He knew who I was, he knew the whole thing," adding that her husband is not the "jealous type".
Julia revealed that her choice was closely intertwined with her body's natural aging process and her reluctance to frequent the gym.
"The reason why I stopped doing boy-girl was because, as a woman who was getting older... I was finding that I couldn’t control where my fat was going in a scene with guys," she revealed.
"This is my reality and no bulls**t. When I have sex with a girl, I can position myself, I can work it a certain way, I can be a little bit more, oh how you doing today?
"But when a guy's behind you, it's just [doink doink doink] and stuff is just happening and I can feel it happening."
Holly, who also has 20 years in the adult industry, concurred, adding: "Especially with more seasoned guys, they will move you around into whatever position… that's great when you're thin and little and petite and look good from every angle."
Julia further explained that she has become self-conscious about her body, including how wrinkles may appear on camera, and said that following menopause, her body "moves separate from itself."
She also addressed the topic of having a relationship while being in the adult film industry, discussing the comments she and Holly received from those outside of the business.
"They like to cut people like that, so instead of saying like the guy literally doesn't care, they're like, oh that guy's some sort of sad cuck," Julia said.
However, Julia remains defiant that those who make hateful comments would be too insecure to handle relationships with her in real life anyway.

An adult film star who began working in the industry over 30 years ago has revealed why she now refuses to star in scenes with male performers.
As per the Daily Mail, 53-year-old Julia Ann appeared in her first adult movie in 1992 and has made a name for herself as one of the top names in the industry.
The star has recently opened up on the Holly Randall Unfiltered podcast, where she shared her experiences in the business, as well as her reasons for why she now only stars in all female scenes.
Just before making the decision, Julia explained that she tied the knot with her husband who is not involved in the adult film industry, but this wasn't part of her decision-making.
The 53-year-old explained that her husband isn't the "jealous type" as she further revealed: "He knew who I was, he knew the whole thing."
Julia told listeners that the reason she no longer works with men is due to her body changing as she ages and goes through menopause.
"The reason why I stopped doing boy girl was because, as a woman who was getting older, and one who hates the gym, I was finding that I couldn’t control where my fat was going in a scene with guys," she explained.
