Johnny Depp once passed out while at the beach with his kids, the jury was told at his ongoing defamation trial against his former wife Amber Heard.

Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 36, over a 2018 op-ed she penned for The Washington Post, in which she shared her experience with domestic abuse. While he was not named in the article, Depp argues that it falsely suggests Heard was abused by him during their relationship.

The trial continued in Fairfax, Virginia, on Tuesday as Tara Roberts, a manager on Depp's private island in the Bahamas, testified over video link.

Roberts was cross examined by Heard's lawyer Elaine Bredehoft and recounted an incident that took place in the summer of 2013 when the Fantastic Beasts star took his family on a yacht trip.

Bredehoft asked Robert if she could recall that Depp's children Lily-Rose and Jack "were upset on the yacht and wanted to leave it immediately," and she was called to ask that she arrange for a helicopter to take them away with Heard.

Watch as Roberts is questioned by Heard's legal counsel:

Roberts said she had indeed arranged for transportation off the island for the Aquaman star and Lily-Rose, but did not recall whether Lily-Rose and Jack were upset.

Bredehoft asked if Roberts remembered that Jack had decided "at the last minute to stay back."

Roberts said: "He stayed."

Bredehoft asked: "Do you recall Lily-Rose saying to you she was upset because her father was drinking and he was trying to hide it from her."

Following an objection from Depp's attorney, Roberts did not answer.

Bredehoft said: "Do you recall Mr. Depp passing out in the sand face first?"

Roberts said: "I recall he was passed out on the beach, he was out on the beach."

Bredehoft said: "Do you have a recollection of Jack being present when Mr. Depp was passed out face first in the sand?"

Roberts said: "Yes."

When asked by the attorney to expand on the incident where he passed out on the beach, Roberts said: "He was passed out, I picked him up, brushed him off. He was in a hammock. I believe he'd fallen asleep and the hammock overturned. I picked him up and left him underneath the (inaudible) with Jack."

Bredehoft asked: "Do you believe Amber would cover up bruises to hide them from the kids?"

Following another objection Roberts did not answer.

Bredehoft asked: "Do you have any understanding whether she'd try to cover up bruises or cuts to keep them from the kids?"

Again Depp's legal team objected to the question, and Roberts did not answer.
