Phillip Schofield's wife, Stephanie Lowe, has broken her silence after her husband came out as gay earlier this week.

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday about the shock revelation, the 55-year-old said, "We've had to face the most emotionally painful time in our 27 years of marriage".

This comes after Schofield revealed in an interview with the publication that he "knew" he was gay for some time, and that his wife gave him the space he needed to come to terms with his sexuality before making it public.

In the video below, Schofield comes out to the world:

"Steph is my closest confidante. She's been amazing. I have no secrets from Steph," he said in the emotional interview. "We have been very truthful and honest. She has known for a while. When you live with someone you know these things don't you?"

"We sat down and we talked and then she left me to have space. I don't know what it would have been like if I had a different person in my life," he continued.

"It has been a process, we started having discussions and it was gradual. There is no question she is a truly remarkable person - the kindest, sweetest soul I could have possibly met.

That is what makes this so hard. Knowing you are hurting the perfect person. But I still love Steph as much as when we first met. More probably."

According to the Mirror, the 57-year-old currently is currently not planning on divorcing his wife.

An insider said: "Steph isn’t bitter over Phil’s coming out. She isn’t the type to be spiteful by dragging him into court.''

"She's saying she’ll stick with him until he's settled and happy in a new relationship, and then they'll talk about an amicable split deal."
