Russell Brand has announced that he will be undergoing a baptism in the hopes of leaving his "sins" behind.

After what has seemingly been a difficult year for the star, who faced accusations of rape by four women, Brand is hoping that he can find peace in religion.

Taking to Instagram on Friday, the 48-year-old posted a video telling his fans that he's ready to take the "plunge."

“This Sunday, I’m taking the plunge. I’m getting baptized,” he began in his video announcement, crouching down on the ground.

“What’s been explained to me is, it’s an opportunity to die and be reborn. An opportunity to leave the past behind and be reborn in Christ’s name," he continued before referencing a verse from the Bible.

“Like it says in Galatians: that you can live as an enlightened and awakened person.”

The “Rock of Ages” alum said the prospect of baptism was “so inviting and beautiful.”

“People are so cynical about the increasing interest in Christianity and the return to God, but to me, it’s obvious,” he explained. “As meaning deteriorates in the modern world, as our value systems and institutions crumble, all of us become increasingly aware that there is this eerily familiar awakening and beckoning figure that we’ve all known all of our lives, within us and around us.

"And for me, it’s very exciting," he added.

He also confessed that he wanted to be baptized in the River Thames in London, but after discovering that it had high levels of E. coli - which is a type of bacteria commonly found in raw or undercooked meat - he decided against it.

“I may be leaving behind the sins, but I might be picking up some pretty serious viruses,” he joked.

Brand received an outpouring of support from his fans as well as his friends, with former Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger commenting: "Amen! So awesome you are doing this! Jesus is the way! You will be reborn, renewed and cleansed! Maybe just don’t do it in the Thames... Praying for you."

Journalist David Harris Jr. also added: "Jesus Himself, was baptized... A great act of faith in God indeed! And then you must be born of water, and of the Spirit! Ask Jesus to fill you with His Presence, and He will!"

It comes shortly after the comedian was accused of rape by four women last year, who alleged that the incidents occurred between 2006 and 2013.

Brand has strongly denied these claims.

While he admitted that he was "very promiscuous" in the past, he stated that all of his intimate encounters had been "consensual."

“I was always transparent about that. Then, almost too transparent, and I’m being transparent about it now as well. To see that transparency metastasized into something criminal that I absolutely deny makes me question, is there another agenda at play?” he said at the time.

Later on, he spoke to Tucker Carlson to elaborate on the issue further.

“Attacks like this, a crisis like this – hurtful as it is to be accused of what I consider to be the most appalling crime – to be accused of this is very, very painful and very hurtful,” he said in a YouTube video.

“But I am being shown that there are consequences for the rather foolish way I lived in the past. Though of course, again, to reiterate, due to the nature of the world we live in, of course I deny any allegations of the kind that have been advanced.”

So far, no formal charges have been brought against the star, though there is an ongoing investigation into the allegations.
