Russell Brand has shared a snapshot from his baptism in the River Thames, with British survival expert Bear Grylls right by his side.

The ceremony, held in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, was a special moment for the 48-year-old comedian, who described it as an “opportunity to leave the past behind.”

This declaration comes not long after Brand was spotlighted in a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary that brought to light allegations of sexual assault against him.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday (May 8), Brand uploaded a photo capturing a tender moment with Grylls and another friend, all soaking in the river's embrace. The caption read: “Me, Bear Grylls, The River Thames, and of course, The Holy Spirit.”

Grylls, a well-known devout Christian, told the Daily Mail that helping Brand through his baptism was a “privilege,” especially during such a challenging period in the comedian's life.

“Faith and spiritual moments in our lives are really personal,” Grylls explained. “But it is a privilege to stand beside anyone when they express a humble need for forgiveness and strength from above.”

Brand and Grylls previously adventured together on Running Wild with Bear Grylls in the Hebrides in 2023. Grylls, who promotes Christianity through various initiatives like the Alpha course, continues to be a supportive figure in Brand’s life.

Brand expressed his gratitude in an earlier Instagram video, saying he felt “incredibly blessed” following the ceremony. “I got baptized and it was an incredible, profound experience,” he shared. “I’m so grateful to be surrendered in Christ.”

The backdrop to this spiritual renewal is complex. Last September (2023), a Channel 4 Dispatches and Sunday Times investigation brought forth allegations from four women accusing Brand of rape, sexual assault, and abuse during the peak of his fame between 2006 and 2013.

One accuser alleged that Brand had been dismissive of her age during their initial interactions and had later sexually assaulted her.

Amid these serious allegations, which have been rigorously denied by Brand, the comedian remains a figure of public interest and controversy.

He recently discussed the allegations with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, describing them as “very, very hurtful” and emphasizing the importance of focusing on what matters in life, especially during tough times such as when his infant son was undergoing heart surgery.
