Speaking to the Mail, 91-year-old Roquebrune revealed that the Oscar-winner's battle with dementia had taken a huge toll on his life.

"It was no life for him. He was not able to express himself latterly," she said.

She added that her husband of 45 years "got what he wanted" and passed away in his sleep.

"It was just so peaceful," Roquebrune told the Mail. "I was with him all the time and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted."

Roquebrune - a French-Moroccan painter - first met Connery at a golf tournament, and the two would later marry in 1975.

She was the actor's second wife, having married actress Diane Cilento in 1962, before divorcing in 1973.

Speaking of their time together, Roquebrune said: "He was gorgeous and we had a wonderful life together.

"He was a model of a man. It is going to be very hard without him, I know that. But it could not last forever and he went peacefully."

He is perhaps best known for portraying the fictional British spy James Bond, first taking up the role in the 1962 movie Dr. No.

Sir Sean would reprise his role as 007 for the movies From Russia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), and Diamonds Are Forever (1971).
