Elliot Page has opened up about a terrifying transphobic attack he suffered while walking to a convenience store in Los Angeles.

The actor, 36, best known for starring in Juno and The Umbrella Academy, came out as trans in 2020 and has kept fans updated with their journey, including having top surgery.

While he received overwhelming support from fans and co-stars around the world, things haven't always been easy with strangers.

Elliot opened up about a terrifying incident that happened to him last year when he was threatened with violence by a man in the street.

The Canadian star revealed in his new memoir Pageboy that he was subjected to transphobic harassment while walking to a convenience store from his hotel in West Hollywood last year.

Elliot revealed he was accosted by a stranger who yelled: "I'm going to f**king gay bash you, f****t."

The actor says he went into the store to ask for help as the stranger shouted: "This is why I need a gun."

Elliot, who lives in New York, revealed to the Los Angeles Times: "Now when I’m in Los Angeles, I don’t feel comfortable like I used to going for walks."

Despite the terrifying incident, Elliot still acknowledges that he is more fortunate than most trans people who face the same cruelty just going about their own day-to-day lives.

"Doesn’t mean it’s not traumatic," he admitted. "But I have resources that, in every instance that is difficult, protect and can shield me from these things."

Although Elliot came out in 2020, he previously revealed that he first began to feel "disconnected" with his gender identity when he began puberty.

He explained in an ABC News special: "When my body started to change, clothes sat on me differently, and all of that was just the beginning of really sort of disconnecting from myself and feeling a degree of discomfort that was very erosive and damaging.

"I don’t think I even at that point had probably even heard the word transgender. If it did come up, it would be, you know, briefly in health class with the sound of laughter.

"The experiences I had in regards to bullying only encourages the shame that literally makes you sick. The hiding, the self-disgust."

Elliot came out as transgender in December 2020, telling fans that he was finally ready to "fully embrace who I am".

He wrote at the time: "I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive."

In May 2023, Elliot took to Instagram to share his first shirtless selfie, writing: "Dysphoria used to be especially rife in the summer.

"No layers, just a T-shirt - or layers and oh so sweaty - constantly looking down, readjusting my oversized T. It feels so f’ing good soaking in the sun now, I never thought I could experience this, the joy I feel in my body.

"I am so grateful for what gender affirming care has allowed me and I look forward to sharing more of my journey soon."
