Disney has announced that Sister Act 3 is officially happening, and almost three decades on from the 1992 original film, it will star Whoopi Goldberg.

Yesterday, it was confirmed that Sister Act 3 will premiere on Disney+, the corporation's streaming service.

Goldberg, 65, will return to reprise her role as Deloris Van Cartier: a singer who was forced to enter the witness protection program and was subsequently relocated as a nun in a convent.

No details about the content of the third installment have been revealed, the Daily Mail reports.

The original 1992 film was a box office hit, but its sequel, which was released a year later, did not receive such a positive reaction, however, both films have retained a cult following since their release in the early nineties.

The project is being helmed by producer Tyler Perry, Disney revealed, however, there is no release date as yet.

Announcing the film on Twitter, Disney wrote: "Sister Act 3 is in development! @WhoopiGoldberg returns to star and produce, with @TylerPerry as producer as well. Sister Act 3 will premiere on @DisneyPlus."

As per CNN, Goldberg teased the third installment of Sister Act in an interview with James Corden back in October.

"For a long time they kept saying no-one wanted to see it, and then quite recently it turns out that that may not be true," she said.

Goldberg said the first two films were "fun and it feels good."

"People might want to see it. So we're working diligently to figure out how to get the gang together," she added. "Listen - bad singing, great singing. OK singing and then nuns. What's better than that?"

Disney's announcement of Sister Act 3 was made alongside the revelation of a number of other projects that are set across its television and movie platforms.

Other notable titles announced, per CNN, were the Alien TV series, which is set to air on FX, and Disney+'s Rangers of the New Republic - a Star Wars spin-off series that's set with the Mandalorian universe.

Sister Act 3 will mark Goldberg and Perry's fourth collaboration.
