There's no doubt that Bambi is one of Disney's absolute masterpieces: a solemn meditation on childhood, coming-of-age, family, and man's relationship with nature. Plus, almost everyone remembers being utterly traumatized by the scene where the cute little deer's mom is tragically shot by a game hunter.
But now Disney has announced that they're planning on following the winning formula they've taken with Dumbo, The Lion King and Lady and the Tramp, and are officially making a live-action version of Bambi.
Previously, Disney managed to remake Lady and the Tramp with an all-star canine cast:According to a recent report by Variety, the script of the live-action adaptation is being penned by screenwriters Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”) and Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”), while the movie is due to be produced by Chris and Paul Weitz. There's no word yet on who will direct, or on who will join the movie's cast to voice the characters of Bambi, Flower, Thumper, et al.
However, on social media, plenty of hardcore Disney fans have reacted with dismay over the prospect of having to have their hearts ripped to shreds by that damn hunter all over again, and have taken to Twitter to voice their opinion on the remake. Ever since the release of the Tim Burton live-action Alice in Wonderland movie back in 2010, Disney has been remaking plenty of its animated classics - which have grossed the studio over $8.2 billion worldwide.
Indeed, there are plenty more remakes yet on the horizon, with 2020 featuring redone versions of Mulan (directed by Niki Caro), and a prequel to 101 Dalmatians focussing on the villainous character of Cruella DeVille, starring Emma Stone as the fur-obsessed fiend.
