Mrs World has been arrested after assaulting a newly-crowned beauty queen.
Caroline Jurie, 28 – the reigning Mrs World – was charged with assault by police after she viciously snatched a crown from the new Mrs Sri Lanka's head, leaving her needing hospital treatment.
She attempted to justify her rash actions by claiming that Pushpika De Silva, 31, was an ineligible contestant, claiming she was breaking the rules as she is divorced.
However, competition bosses later apologised, returned the crown to De Silva and stressed to fans that she is not divorced, but separated from her husband.
Watch the bizarre incident unfold below:Police spokesman Ajith Rohana told the BBC that officer had "arrested Caroline Jurie and model Chula Padmendra over Sunday's incident on charges of simple hurt and criminal cause."
The outlet states that Mrs World as well as the chief organizer of the Mrs Sri Lanka pageant, Chandimal Jayasinghe, were questioned by police on April 8. The 28-year-old beauty queen is set to appear in Colombo Magistrates Court on April 19.
Opening up about the dramatic encounter in a Facebook post, De Silva said she was left with head injuries following the incident and was in need of hospital treatment.
De Silva had won the Mrs Sri Lanka title on Sunday and previous winner Jurie was meant to crown the new winner.
The Mrs Sri Lanka title is part of the Mrs World beauty pageant series for married women. The winners of each country's title ultimately go on to enter the Mrs World competition.
As shown in viral footage of the incident, which was televised live, Jurie yanked the crown off De Silva's head, telling the audience: "There is a rule that prevents women who have already been married and are divorced, so I am taking steps to make the crown go to second place."
Mrs World then placed the crown on the runner-up, and the de-crowned De Silva walked off stage sobbing.
After the whole debacle, De Silva explained in the above Facebook post that she is actually separated from her husband, not divorced.
"There are a lot of single mums like me today who are suffering in Sri Lanka," the beauty queen later told a press conference, per the BBC. "This crown is dedicated to those women, those single mums who are suffering to raise their kids alone."
She went on to say that she would take legal action for the "unreasonable and insulting" way she was treated.
De Silva was swiftly re-crowned, and the organizers of the event have said they hope Jurie would issue a public apology.
Jayasinghe told the BBC: "We are disappointed. It was a disgrace how Caroline Jurie behaved on the stage and the Mrs World organization has already begun an investigation on the matter."
