Natalie Portman to play female Thor as Marvel makes huge phase 4 announcements

Now that Spiderman: Far From Home has been released in cinemas, phase three of the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe is over with, and what a ride it's been. In Avengers: Endgame, the biggest cast of comic book heroes ever assembled to take down the mad titan Thanos and reverse the cataclysmic effects of the snap. Thanos was defeated, but at a heavy cost.

But if you thought that the Marvel movies were over, then you'd be dead wrong. Phase four is coming, and during the studio's Comic-Con panel, MCU boss Kevin Feige took the opportunity to reveal what fans can expect next.

One of the big surprises was that Natalie Portman is going to return to the MCU. What's more surprising is the announcement that she'll be playing a female version of Thor.

Check out this video of Brie Larson working out for her Captain Marvel role:

The fourth Thor movie has the title "Thor: Love and Thunder", and is due for release on November 2021. We don't know anything about the movie's plot, but the title seems to have the same funky retro font as Ragnarok.

The film is due to be directed by Taika Waititi, who claims to have been inspired by the comic's version of Lady Thor.

Other movies revealed for phase 4 include a Black Widow movie, (starring Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz), The Eternals (starring Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh and Don Lee) Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, an X-Men movie, and a Blade reboot.

In the comics, Jane was promoted to the main character in the 2014 relaunch of the Thor title, where she starred as the new Goddess of Thunder after Thor himself was deemed unworthy. She's since taken on the role of Valkerie, and has a number of superpowers of her own; even assisting the Avengers in the Secret Wars storyline. As for what abilities the movie version will show, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
