There's no doubt that Shrek is one of the most beloved animated movies of all time.
After 20 years, it's safe to say that the Dreamworks fairytale comedy still holds up. However, this week a Twitter user gave the feature a rewatch and uncovered a morbid detail that many viewers simply missed.
In a post earlier this month, a Twitter user uploaded a snippet from the 2001 movie and pointed out a dark joke referencing the fate of a certain character.
In the clip, Donkey's introductory scene shows that the knights of Duloc imprisoning the Three Bears of Goldilocks fame in large iron cages.
The Twitter user can be heard saying: "Alright, we're watching Shrek. Now, we got the three bears; Daddy Bear, Mama Bear, Baby Bear.
"Baby Bear crying cause the cage is too small. Anyway, Mamma Bear got the pink bow, remember that, Mama Bear got the pink bow, remember that pink bow."
We then fast-forward to a scene where the various folkloric characters are gathered together at the Ogre's swampland home. However, the character of Mama Bear is notably absent.
In a later scene set in Lord Faarquad's castle, we see that the villain's bedroom has been furnished with a bearskin rug... a rug with a pink bow at its head.
Therefore, based on these clues we can infer that Lord Faarquad had Mama Bear killed and skinned to furnish his palace, as part of his brutal crackdown on magical creatures.
This shocking revelation clearly resonated with other fans of the movie on Twitter, racking up over 134,000 retweets, 620,000 likes, and a further 30,000 comments, at the time of writing.
For example, one Twitter user reacted by writing: "making her a rug was uncalled for.... ain't even take the bow off #disrespectful [sic]"
Another person wrote: "You’re telling me I used to watch this and have a grand old time? Childhood was DARK. [sic]"
Then this person commented: "I’ve always wondered why they put dark s*** like this in movies that’s supposed to be for kids… something so sinister about that to me."
Finally, someone else commented: "Made this observation when the movie first came out on DVD. Still scarred, still hilariously funny."
They added: "Also, for anybody that actually still has the original DVD, the mama bear is nowhere to be found at the starting menu screen either."
