The creator of Netflix's new hit show Squid Game has revealed the meaning behind its unique name.

Squid Game, a South Korean action series, has been a hit on the streaming service since it was released on September 17, and, per Radio Times, it is now the most-watched title globally and in the UK.

The show centers around a group of 456 people who risk their lives as part of a mysterious survival show in a bid to win $38,460,271.20 (₩45.6 billion).

Now, the show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has revealed the inspiration behind its unusual name.

Watch the trailer for Squid Game below:

"Squid Game is a game I used to play as a child in the schoolyard or the streets of the neighborhood," he told the Radio Times. "This is a story about people who used to play this game as children and return to play it as adults.

"It was one of the most physical and it was also one of my favorite games. I felt that this game could be the most symbolic children’s game that could represent the kind of society we live in today."

Hwang revealed that Squid Game has been in the works for a long time and the first draft of the hit series was actually completed back in 2009, with development beginning in 2008.

However, it took over a decade for the series to be picked up by Netflix and become the hit it is today.

"I was reading a lot of comic books, and I finished the script in 2009," he explained. "At the time, it seemed very unfamiliar and violent. There were people who thought it was a little too complex and not commercial. I wasn't able to get enough investment and casting was difficult. I dabbled in it for about a year, but I had to put it to sleep then."

Pop Base reports that Squid Game is currently on track to become Netflix's most popular ever show.

The co-CEO of Netflix Ted Sarandos said: "It will definitely be Netflix's biggest non-English language show in the world and it's a very good chance it's going to be our biggest show ever."
