In what will probably be the strangest collaboration of the year, One Direction's Niall Horan performed for President Joe Biden at the White House - but unfortunately, there was no duet.

St. Patrick's Day rolled around on Friday and the usual celebrations took place with green decorations and clothing dominating the day.

The patron saint of Ireland is celebrated in many parts of the world, with the US really getting into the festivities largely due to many who reside here having Irish lineage.

Horan, a member of One Direction who is currently forging a solo career, found himself a long way from his home in Mullingar, Ireland - but he didn't celebrate the day alone.

Armed with his guitar, the singer put on a special performance in the East Room of the White House in front of the St. Patrick's Day plaque.

Horan's set appeared to go down well with the intimate audience, one of which was Commander-in-Chief Joe Biden.

The singer took to Instagram where he updated fans on his whereabouts, captioning his video: "Couldn’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day alone."

During the video, he wished his followers a very happy St. Patrick's Day before turning the camera to reveal the beaming President.

"And me too, I'm here at the White House, I hang out here every once in a while," President Biden said while patting Horan on the shoulder.

Both men were wearing a Shamrock, with the President sporting a green tie, as is the custom to wear something green on St. Patrick's Day.

The video went down very well with Horan's followers, with Formula 1 star Lando Norris commenting: "Coolest vid ever."

After his set, the President joined Horan on stage - sadly not to sing - where the pair embraced and appeared to get on incredibly well.

Addressing the room following the event, as cited by the Daily Mail, President Biden said: "Together, Ireland and America have written ourselves a better future.

"The United States has benefited greatly from waves of immigration from Ireland — the island of Ireland, who helped shape this nation: the Scottish-Irish of the 18th century; the Irish who came during the 19th century, like my ancestors, during the famine and beyond.

"Growing up Irish American gave me the pride that spoke to both sides of the Atlantic, heart, and soul that drew from the old and new," the President added to his lengthy speech.

The White House also hosted Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to celebrate the day.

As has become a tradition, the Chicago River was dyed green for St. Patrick's Day, and as per NBC, it remains the vibrant color for several hours before returning back to normal.

Maybe the President can replace Zayn Malik as the newest member of One Direction when the hiatus finally ends...
