It seems like Twitter has rebranded to X not only as part of Elon Musk's plan to create an "everything app," but also because it's the billionaire's favorite letter.

On Monday (July 24), the 52-year-old tech mogul marked his latest major shift since his $44 billion takeover of the social media platform in October 2022.

Musk announced to the platform's users that after two decades, Twitter's world-renowned blue bird is no more and will be officially replaced with an "X" logo.

He also informed people that the X website now redirects to twitter.com, and posted a picture of the new logo projected across the company’s headquarters.

Twitter’s abrupt change stems partly from the billionaire's fondness for the letter X, which has appeared throughout his career and life.

Not only is the special letter used for Tesla X and SpaceX, but he even named one of his children, X Æ A-Xii - I mean who could forget?

Musk seemingly confirmed his admiration on Sunday (July 23) after tweeting a picture of him making an "X" sign with his hand, with the caption: "Not sure what subtle clues gave it away, but I like the letter X."

However, not many people are impressed with the modifications Musk is making to the popular app as one user said that it's "the dumbest s*** ever," while another described it as "annoying".

A third person commented: "The iconic bird will be a simple 'X'?! Elon Musk, what the heck you are thinking?! That's the reason why this place is called 'TWITTER,' it came because the bird."

A fourth chimed in: "Rebranding Twitter to X is gonna kill a good band story. We’re all birds. They’re called tweets because a tweet is a sound a bird makes. That’s why the home icon is a nest house and when your account is new, your picture is an egg. The heck is X?"

Linda Yaccarino, who Musk hired as the chief executive of Twitter last month, gave more details about what the new X app will offer on Sunday. Yaccarino tweeted that the rebranding was part of the company’s goal to "transform the global town square" beyond a social platform.

"X is the future state of unlimited interactivity - centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking - creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine," she said.

"For years, fans and critics alike have pushed Twitter to dream bigger, to innovate faster, and to fulfill our great potential. X will do that and more. We’ve already started to see X take shape over the past 8 months through our rapid feature launches, but we’re just getting started," she added.

In other news, the latest changes come as the social media giant continues to face competition from Mark Zuckerberg's new app, Threads, which launched earlier this month.
