Anne Hathaway has disclosed the reason why she hates being called by her first name.

The Hollywood star has graced our screens since the early 2000s, blessing us with her well-known roles such as playing Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries and Andrea "Andy" Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada.

The 42-year-old actress, who recently starred as Solène Marchand in The Idea of You, has cemented herself - and her name - as an icon in the world of cinema.

But it turns out that Hathaway is not a fan of her first name and would actually prefer if people called her “anything but Anne”.

She shared this revelation during an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in 2021.

Watch Hathaway discuss her name in the video below:

The Princess Diaries star explained to the host that she dislikes being called Anne, having adopted the moniker at the age of 14 when it was the name she went by.

"When I was 14 years old I did a commercial and I had to get my SAG (Screen Actors Guild) card and they asked me 'what do you want your name to be?'" she said.

"And I'm like, well it should be my name - my name is Anne Hathaway... and that seemed like the right choice, but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life people would call me Anne," she told the host.

She then shared that "the only person who ever calls me Anne is my mother, and she only does it when she’s really mad at me".

“And, so every time, like, I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me,” she added.

The Intern star understands that fans and coworkers don’t want to be “presumptuous” and think they can use whatever name they like for her.

However, no one is "comfortable" calling her Anne on set as it "doesn't fit," because she's an Annie. "And so people call me, like, ‘Miss H.’ People call me ‘Hath.’ So feel free, call me anything but Anne,” she quipped, concluding the conversation about her name.

Many fans took to social media to express their support for the Hollywood star's wish to be known as Annie.

"I LOVE that you go by Annie! I will never think of you as Ann again!" one person on X commented, while another shared: "Note to self: find her, call her Annie, have her love me so I can be one of her bffs because she’s an amazing person ."
