Anne Hathaway may be one of the most recognizable names in the world... but it turns out she's not a fan of it.

The 41-year-old Princess Diaries star is used to performing as a lot of different characters throughout her career, including Mia Thermopolis, Fantine, and Andy Sachs - just to name a few. But when it comes to her own name, Hathaway - like many of us - prefers a nickname.

While appearing on a previous episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the host asked whether or not he can call Hathaway, ‘Annie’, as a lot of her close friends do.

To which, the actress immediately replied: “Call me Annie!”

"Can we talk about my name for a second?" Hathaway then asked Fallon.

It was then that the Princess Diaries star explained that she actually hates being called Anne, having adopted the moniker at the age of 14 when it was the name that she went by.

She said: "When I was 14 years old I did a commercial and I had to get my SAG (Screen Actors Guild) card and they asked me 'what do you want your name to be?'

"And I'm like, well it should be my name - my name is Anne Hathaway... and that seemed like the right choice, but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life people would call me Anne," she told Fallon in the interview

So, what would the actress like to be referred to as?

"Anything but Anne," she explained, smiling. "The only person who ever calls me Anne is my mother, and she only does it when she’s really mad at me."

“And, so every time, like, I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me.”

The actress understands that fans and colleagues don’t want to be “presumptuous” and assume they can use whatever name they like for her. However, on sets, she said: “Nobody is comfortable calling me Anne ever. It doesn't fit. I’m an Annie.

"And so people call me, like, ‘Miss H.’ People call me ‘Hath.’ So feel free, call me anything but Anne.”

X supporters are getting behind Hathaway’s wish to be known as Annie.

One user commented: “I LOVE that you go by Annie! I will never think of you as Anne again!”

So, there we have it, if you ever are lucky enough to meet Anne Hathaway, make sure you call her Annie, not Anne!
