Anne Hathaway is on the receiving end of backlash after she issued a stern warning to fans waiting to take pictures with her.

A resurfaced video of the actress has recently garnered some attention online after the clip showed her telling fans to calm down before letting them know that she would not be able to take pictures with them all.

The clip was taken while Hathaway was walking to her car following the Valentino fashion show in Italy last year.

"Calma [calm]," she instructed the crowd in front of her while gesturing for them to quiet down.

"I cannot take photos with everyone," the 41-year-old told the fans in front of her. "But I will stand here and wave if you would like to take a photograph. I cannot sign; there are too many of you."

"Mi displace [I’m sorry], but I want you to have something, so if you’d like, I’ll just wave a little bit. Thank you for understanding. Thank you for waiting." she added.

Then a member of the crowd asks if she could just take one photo with them, but the Princess Diaries declines, responding back with: "I cannot take it with you because then I have to take one with everyone and there's so many, but thank you so much."

The viral clip was reposted to X (formerly known as Twitter) by social media influencer Oli London, who questioned whether people thought she was being polite or rude - which sparked an intense debate on the platform.

"Very polite. Celebrities are not obligated to engage with fans," wrote one user while another agreed: "Seems polite. She could’ve just walked away and snubbed them."

A third also stated: "I feel like she handled that well, especially if it was in-the-moment."

However, others did not agree. "With how long she took to [be] condescending, she could possibly have signed and took the photos. She was being unnecessary," this user commented.

Others also accused her of being fake with this X-user writing: "Rude and fake polite at the same time."

Someone else added: "Who would want her autograph anyway???"

Yikes.

Over time, Hathaway has clearly learned to ask for what she needs especially after experiencing one too many uncomfortable moments throughout her career.

"I just remembered one of the very first questions I ever got asked when I started acting and had to do press was: Are you a good girl or a bad girl?" Hathaway said while discussing her movie Eileen as per Variety. "I was 16. And my 16-year-old self wanted to respond with this film [Eileen]."

Hathaway said she decided to sign up for the role in the movie after seeing director William Oldroyd’s acclaimed 2016 drama, Lady MacBeth, which starred Florence Pugh as a woman trapped in a miserable marriage to a much older man.

"I thought it was an extraordinary work," Hathaway said. "I saw a study of female complication that hit me really, really deep, and I felt like Will was a filmmaker that could be trusted to tell complicated stories, especially about females."

Eileen tells the story of a young secretary becomes enchanted by Rebecca, the glamorous new counselor at the prison where she works. However, their budding friendship soon takes a twisted turn when Rebecca reveals a dark secret.

Hathaway's latest project involves playing a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with the 24-year-old lead singer in the upcoming movie titled The Idea of You.

The Idea of You is set to hit screens later in 2024.
