A bride-to-be has revealed that her fiancé wants her to wear a red wedding dress because she lost her virginity in a prior relationship.

Marriages are quite a traditional affair that used to be a religious occasion where two individuals became a partnership in the eyes of God.

Women were unable to have sexual relationships before marriage, otherwise, they would face dire consequences both from their families and the community. A white wedding dress would be used to signify a woman's "purity".

The world has progressed since then - white dresses have remained but are now worn as more of a tradition as opposed to being used to signify anything about somebody's sex life.

Though it would appear that some still take the meaning of a white wedding dress seriously, as one woman found out and revealed it all on Reddit.

Posting on the Off My Chest forum, the bride-to-be revealed that her fiancé wanted her to wear a red wedding dress because she had been in sexual relationships before meeting him.

She revealed that she has been with her partner for six years and they were content together, but rifts started to emerge when she revealed that she wanted a white wedding dress.

"When I asked him what color he thought I’d be wearing, he told me I should wear red," she explained. "Again, this was super weird to me. I asked him why I would wear red to our wedding, and he told me that brides only wear white when they are pure."

The anonymous woman went on to explain that she and her fiancé Ryan had met when they were in their early 20s and that she'd had one previous sexual relationship which Ryan struggled to come to terms with at the start.

The argument escalated to Ryan's mother who appeared to take the woman's side, stating that her son was also no longer a virgin so he should wear red too.

People in the comments were understandably shocked by these events, as they seem fairly old-fashioned. One person commented: "You should wear red to symbolize the sea of red flags around this guy you're (hopefully not) marrying."

A second person added: "She could make that red dress he wants her to wear with all of those red flags he gave her!" and a third said: "This man will always respect you less because you had a life before him. This is not marriage material. Sorry."

The woman revealed that she was having second thoughts about marrying her fiancé after the argument and that he had stated that men could sleep with other women before marriage because it's "different for men."

It's difficult to see his side of things here.
