A couple has been slammed on social media after they dyed an entire waterfall blue for their big gender party reveal.
As I'm sure you've all seen from social media posts by now, gender reveal parties are held during a pregnancy to allow the parents to reveal the baby's gender to their family and friends. Sometimes, they're even done to surprise the parents themselves.
However, this one couple - reportedly from Brazil - has appeared to stage a unique yet dangerous way of finding out the gender of their forthcoming baby.
In a viral video shared on Reddit, the couple's families are seen embracing each other as dark blue dyed water flows down from the waterfall behind them.
Watch the video below:While the moment is meant to be heartwarming for the couple, many users on the social media platform couldn't help but mention how dangerous and irresponsible it is for the environment.
One user wrote: "Why does it need to be so extra and so polluting? What is wrong with just a cake?"
Another shared: "Let's not only [pollute] a natural, beautiful waterfall and all the water flowing down it into the lake/river, but let's also set [off] smoke bombs. All of this in some actual nature. Plant life and wildlife all around. Oh, throw in a bunch of balloons too that we probably won't clean up and just leave here."
A third commented: "Fun fact in case anyone forgot: The first gender reveal party (in 2008) really was just a cake with pink color inside. Everyone had to keep one-upping each other until now we have people dying, explosions, wildfires, and environmental disasters."
A fourth joked: "Whoever started the whole gender reveal party thing needs to be tried for crimes against humanity."
"Can't get any trashier, literally and figuratively! I hate to imagine what they left behind them. I bet they didn't clean the balloons and other trash," another redditor added.
Another user shared that they aren't defending the couple but are hoping the dyes are "environmentally safe" as it would be better than "popping balloons and leaving the scraps around".
"I don't agree with doing this, but there is a decent chance the dye is an environmentally safe dye. They use dyes like this to track water for different purposes. They also use it to dye the Chicago river green every year," they wrote.
"Again not defending it, but chances are the dye is the least impactful part of all of this. I'd be more worried about them popping balloons and leaving the scraps around," they added.
According to a Brazilian news outlet, Secretaria de Estado de Meio Ambiente do Mato Grosso (the Secretary of State For The Environment), allegedly said they will notify the owner of the area so that they can confirm who was responsible for the action.
The investigation will reportedly look into the environmental damage of the waterfall and will examine how much material was released into the water.
If it is confirmed that an environmental crime has occurred, those responsible for the viral video will allegedly be charged and held accountable for the crime.
