A woman has been urged to dump her boyfriend after he staged a proposal prank which many social media users found to be cruel.

According to a report by the Daily Mirror, the video in question was uploaded by a TikTok user named Hannah Luck.

The footage - which has since accrued over 1.3 million views, 155,000 reactions, and over 3,100 comments - shows Hannah's boyfriend supposedly treating her to a Christmas surprise.

Take a look at the video in question below:

In it, Hannah's boyfriend can be seen kneeling down and presenting her with a small box, which looks a lot like one that would commonly hold an engagement ring.

As Hannah bursts into tears, her partner states: "I love you so much, it's been six years. Will you please... take these earrings?"

He then opens the box to reveal that he'd actually bought her a pair of earrings as a Christmas present, and wasn't making a marriage proposal at all.

However, a large number of TikTok users were upset by Hannah's reaction and found the video to be needlessly nasty.

For instance, one person wrote: "6 years and he makes a joke like that?? Hell no I'd leave him. [sic]"

Meanwhile, someone else added: "I'd take the earrings and wear them on a date with my new future husband. [sic]"

However, Hannah herself has since responded to the outpouring of outrage from disgruntled social media users, claiming that the video in question was actually filmed on Christmas day 2019 and that her boyfriend genuinely proposed to her in March.

Commenting on the controversy in a follow-up post, Hannah stated: "I'm pretty surprised this video got as many views as it did."

She continued: "Also, kind of taken back by how many people really hate my fiancé. He's not a bad person, I posted this because I thought it was funny. Our relationship is filled with us playing jokes on each other."

She added: "Also, sorry that my last two videos are really poorly edited. I think I may be too old for TikTok. But we'll see. Maybe I'll get better?"
