A wedding guest has caused a stir on social media after sharing the vegan option they were provided during their meal.

The original photo of the depressing plate of food was shared by Brooklyn-based photographer, Gigi - who also goes by the handle '@nerdzrope' on Twitter.

Now, as a vegan myself, I understand that I'm going to be limited on options whenever I'm dining out. However, the plate of food Gigi was served at a recent wedding has left many people online astonished... for all the wrong reasons.

Gigi shared a photo of the course to Twitter, along with the caption: "Vegan option at a wedding [rolling eyes emoji]".

It is literally a plate of nondescript leaves, three small wedges of melon, and a drizzle of nonsense.

Unsurprisingly, the cheek/nerve/gall/audacity/gumption of the caterers quickly became a topic of conversation on the social media platform, with people slamming the 'meh' meal.

"Man I'd have just left. When you consider how much weddings cost, venues are really lazy at catering for the guests with specific requirements," one Twitter user replied. "It's not hard to make amazing vegan food, as was proven by the last wedding I attended. Was made to feel very special."

A second added: "Oh my god [...] Fire the caterers! Thats...No."

Other Twitter users branded the plate of food a "disgrace", "embarrassing", and "pathetic".

The post even made its way over to the Wedding Shamers Reddit thread, along with the title: "Please be considerate about people's choices at your wedding."

Over on Reddit, one person responded to the photo saying: "As a chef - that’s not the couple, that’s a poorly run kitchen. No self-respecting chef would serve this."

A second Redditor added: "I don't know, this looks more like an insult rather than a meal. I've got relatives that would pull something like this. My whole life they f***ed with me because I'm a veggie."

Another added: "I've worked as a cook. This is f***ing ridiculous. It is not hard to make tasty, lovely vegetarian or vegan dishes. Had this been my caterer at my wedding, I'd go bridezilla as f**k on their a**es."

Since posting the snap, Gigi has revealed in two separate tweets that she did order a takeout to eat while she was getting ready, and to make matters worse:
